We have a little bench by the front door, and my husband is up to 3 pairs there, which necessitates my kids just throwing theirs in the general direction of the bench

Are you sure that it is in the center of kitchen and not off to the side!
Maybe you should take a tape measure and find the center of the Kitchen to make sure the center of the kitchen is where you think it is.
