PC to Ipad external hard drive?

The power socket on Banana ladies laptop has come loose and dissapeared inside, her computer guy has fished it out, but has ordianed a new computer and she is going to get an Ipad.

I have snobbishly poo pooed apple products so don't know much about them practically, but I think this a good solution for her,

but all her digital photos are on the laptop, computer guy said he would take out the hard drive and put it in a case to connect to her ipad and still have access to her photos.

I would like to get the laptop, glue the power socket in place and have another computer about the place, i can replace the hard drive, but the windows installation will be on it.

My proposal is to get a new external hard drive and transfer the pictures to it. We're not talking 100's of Gigs, maybe 10 or 20, a decent sized USB would probably do it too.

but, pictures have to come off a PC and be available on an IPad. I see that external drives/sticks can work PC or Mac if in FAT32 format, but I think there are file size and name restrictions.

also I don't think Ipads have standard USB ports, so I would need an adapter.

Anybody know of any glaring holes in this plan or have a better idea ?

Use Dropbox. Upload pix to dropbox. Install Dropbox app on iPad. You're good to go.

Thanks
I was thinking some sort of cloud solution may be the thing.

I don't see any size limits on drop drop box, any ideas ?

Dropbox starts at 2GB. You can get more space by referring friends, or by paying for more. (I got 100GB for $40/year)

If you're just using it to transfer the files you shouldn't need to pay, surely. Just upload, save to iPad, delete from DropBox, rinse and repeat ...

Dropbox integrates very well with the iPad and is a great solution.

I use Dropbox to integrate 2 iPads, an iPhone, my Macbook, and a Dell laptop for all my coursework for school. It works very well.

I load up all my course notes and documentation on the Dell or Macbook, and it appears on several devices. This is very handy so I don't have to take paper to classes.

true, it's tricky negotiation though, i's got to be super easy for banana lady.
also Microsoft Surface, seems to be abit more than an Ipad, but would be a familiar format.?

Surface comes with 32 GB, probably enough for her photos, can add 32GB on a microSD

Not sure about this whole plugging a drive into an Ipad, they don't seem very friendly to the idea, need an adapter, not enough power to drive directly.

Don't know, did you solve your problem with connecting an iPad to external drive. ?

But here is a YouTube I came across that seems to address the same set up you are describing.
It does not involve transferring to the cloud.

Do you think Banana lady wants her personal photos, you know, the kinky ones, out on a cloud? What if some hacker to sells them to Hustler Magazine?
