Happy Birthday CD

Happy Birthday CD
On August 17, 1982 at a factory outside Hanover, Germany the Compact Disc was born - and that means that the CD is celebrating it’s 25th birthday today!

Philips and Sony co-developed CD – over 200 billion CDs sold in last 25 years.
CD ushered in shift from analogue to digital in the music industry, spawned new digital technologies, including CD-Rom and DVD.

Yay! Even if it took nearly another 10 years for CDs to completely take over the market. The shift from VHS to DVD went much faster.

I remember eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first CD player in town, or at least the first one available to me. It had showed up in the latest Sears catalog, so I was annoying the guys in the electronics department there periodically.

Finally the day came when the CD player was sitting there. "Well, can you turn it on?" I said. "No."

"Huh???"

"They sent us the player, but it was a mistake. It was supposed to be shipped to the store in Greensboro. They figure we'll never be able to sell something like a CD player in a town this size."

"OK, but can't you turn it on anyway?"

"Well, they sent us the player, but they didn't send any discs."

I think my dad might have been. He's the king of the early adopters. We had a VCR that cost $800, top of the line and brand spanking new. Crazy programming options. I still have it, incidentally, and it's heavy as all getout but it still runs great (unlike the dozens of other VCRs I've gone through over the years.)

Edit: Well, I should say he was the king of early adopters, in his youth. He's still never owned a computer. Says he doesn't need another toy, and of course he knows what they're capable of because he used to program them back in the day. Calls me on a fairly regular basis wanting me to look something up on the internet for him. Even the coolest, trendiest guys turn into old codgers eventually...
