Globalization - a word without meaning!

People talk about globalization, coz of the Net, TV and coz MacDonald's plans to open a store on Antartica.

But is it all just hype? Mopst ppls fave TV programmes turn out to be home made; increases in trade have mostly taken place between wealthier nations; and people still largely identify themselves with the nation (and even the town) of birth, rather than with planet earth!

You know how people rave on about the Internet 'shrinking the planet'. Check out your history - they said the same things about the telegraph!

The reality is that billions remain in poverty, largely ignorant of the wider world and gaining nothing from the wealth being generated in the West. The only genuinely global problem we face is global warming. Surely its time to stop pretending we live in a global village, and throw the word 'globalization' in the garbage!!

     Wait, let me get this straight. The telegraph and follow up forms of communication did nothing to improve understanding of other cultures? It's done nothing to extend knowledge of how other parts of the world differ from ours?
     Might we consider that maybe, just maybe, people continue to connect with the place of their origin while learing more of the world is a form of grounding, of reseating oneself in ones own perspective for viewing all this new information?
     Also, what's your gripe with the poor and ignorant here? What are you suggesting? Maybe we should buy them all a Big Mac and a DVD player?
     Reality check dude. Do people in the US live at a higher standard generally? Yes. Does that make us bad people? No. Or perhaps you think we should all be ignorant and starving, would that make you happy? We don't have the money to bring the world up to our standard and when we try to bring in education to underdeveloped areas we are accused of trying to "westernize" them. That's life.

Globalization is a very real change in the world. Just the fact that you know there are billions of starving people out there belies that fact that globalization exists.

Like with any other complex system of interaction (say, capitalism or socialism) there are lots and lots of gray areas. So what I think what you may be looking for is some more precise nomenclature as to the nature of globalization. Obviously some aspects (i.e., the ability to see bad shit going on in the world and potentially do something about it) are good, and some (i.e., ignoring bad shit, causing bad shit) are not good. Being able to know which is which without having a discussion like this would be useful.

Globalization is nothing more than a buzzword meaning bigger market=bigger profit, period.
It's not a plan to help anyone but the corporate officers and by extention the stockholders. Any benefits to the third (or any other) world are purely coincidental, unintentional and would be eliminated if it meant more profits.
There have been countless other attempts to improve the lot of the third world that have failed. Usually failure in the form of loan defaults or coups but also corruption like Mexican Oil. Without political stability (don't think Marcos or Mao) the poor were, are and will be fucked.

If globalization were real, no individual would even be aware of their surroundings, we'd all just be floating in a big, happy cloud of poverty-free, gray-skinned, doe-eyed, generic humans. He's crisply noting that globalization and regional individuality are mutually exclusive... just re-read his post, and you'll get it. Globalization is a farce!

TP, on a completely, absolutely, unrelated topic, I notice that you spelled "behaviour" with a "u"-- the English spelling. Are you in England, or perhaps Australia? Pretty nifty that we can chat it up on opposite sides of the world without ever having met, eh?
