May 23rd, 2019: Ercoupe
After The Big One, WW II, a lot of military men and women came home with a new life experience under their belt... Flying.
Not only the thousands of pilots but many times that amount of air crew, plus paratroopers and others transported by air. Of course some swore never again, but many were addicted, wanted more. ERCO was ready for that market. Quote:

I doubt it, I doubt the legalities were that nuanced in '45, but I may be naive. It must have looked fool proof at the time, flying was just something highly trained people did. To half the population it equated to witches on brooms.

The FBO where I learned to fly had a couple of these, a couple of Piper Cubs and a few Cessna 150's as basic trainers.
Actually, they had an Ercoupe and an Aircoupe. They were easy to fly, but not as fun as the others (except with the canopy open). A friend bought one about twenty years ago and flew it solo across the US and back, a slow and perforce a carefully planned trip. |

I would think because it was designed to be easy to learn, the pilot wasn't offered controls that he could easily get in trouble with, but that means not having the controls to get out of trouble with either.
