September 20, 2007: Frilled shark

I would have guessed by the name that this was some sort of entree, but no; it turns out to be a rare primitive shark rarely seen alive because its natural habitat is 600 metres (2,000 ft) or more under the sea.

But like many IotDs, we are seeing more and more under the sea that we've never seen before. This time it's seen because marine park employees caught the beast, at closer to our level. They think it surfaced because it was sick or something, and it died shortly after capture.

Maybe you didn't look closely at those teeth. Look again.
