Health and safety takes the cake

March 25, 2005 21:40

GENERATIONS of children have enjoyed it, but now health and safety inspectors say a ride at Felixstowe's funfair is no longer a fairground attraction.

The inspectors have closed the "cake walk" in the Crazy House after 72 years of operation because it does not meet current safety regulations.

But no-one has ever had an accident on the moving walkway, which dates back to the days when funfair visitors gained their thrills from gallopers, big wheels, helter skelters and chair-o-planes.

Becuase nothing has ever been closed for legal reasons in the 'we embody personal responsability' United States.

What search did you do to end up on that story?? But thanks for reminding me; I must write to my MP to get that dangerous looking pen on my desk removed. You could have someone's eye out with that.

You gotta be kidding me TS. Tons of stuff is closed down all the time in the US because inspectors decide that they are unsafe. Ever hear of product recalls even when there have been no accidents? Buildings being shut down for code violations? Constructions sites being shut down because someone got caught not wearing a required safety equipment? The list goes on and on. Just yesterday they shut down commuter trains around here because of potential mechanical problems. Tens of thousands of people have to find another ride to work.

I should have put a smiley, my goal was just moaning about nanny-ish stupidity in general. I just picked on you guys to get a good volley going. We have our own aggregation of assinine assholes.

To whit,

Sunshine Go Away Today (4/15)
The Maryland legislature is considering a bill that would allow students to wear sunscreen when they go out on sunny days. Why would lawmakers need to even consider such legislation? Well, four counties, including Montgomery County, allow students to use sunscreen only if they bring a doctor's note. Eleven counties, including Howard County, require a parent's signature, and eight, also including Howard, insist students must store their sunscreen with the school's health officer. The legislature is also considering a bill that would require schools to permit students to keep their own asthma medicines.

Now, if we can add aspirin/ibuprofin/anything in the aisles of a convenience store to that list, we'll be heading in the right direction.
