A previous time this topic came up, I found the most jarring image I could as an example of my potential avatar. Alas, I hotlinked it, and it is gone. As I recall, it was some sort of animated rooster.

Score two for Happy Monkey, both size and animated avatars.
In another forum they have a mandatory avatar/info box on the left, and if your post is shorter than the new testament, there's a lot of white space to scroll through to get to the next post. Blinking/animated avatars are especially annoying.

The gerbil powering my interwebs begs for mercy at the thought of having to fetch avatars from overseas.
Please, think of the gerbils. Also, my avatar would be the word Zengum against a plain background.

I have visited forums where avatars are polite and petite, but unfortunately the majority tend towards ugly, large, and animated. And, because people have short attention spans, they get changed do often they become statements of personality rather than true identifiers. We have user titles for that.

I've always liked avatars, and I think I'm the only one. I think this question has come up twice in the past.

I'm a visual person. Avatars on other sites help me to distinguish the speaker. If we had avatars here, maybe I'd finally be able to keep Glatt and Griff straight.
I would be against allowing gifs though. No animated avatars.

If they can be turned off, sure. If not, no.

Don't our profile pictures count as avatars. I have been on other boards that have avatars and have found them to be cluttered and unattractive.

If we have avatars, I'll just go to the You RFN thread or User Profiles and pluck a picture of someone different out each week. I might even use a pic of Aliantha for a couple of weeks. It'll be interesting to see if anyone no longer posting here finds out about their picture being used and comes back!
