Newer versions of vBulletin forum software heavily cracked by hax0rs

http://arstechnica.com/security/2013...0-day-attacks/

vbulletin.com itself was hacked, several other major vBulletin sites were hacked, and it's a major fuckup for the Internet.

The one bright spot? cellar.org only runs a version 3 vBulletin installation. It's about six years out of date... but not vulnerable to these exploits. Only versions 4 and 5 are vulnerable.

vBulletin was bought out about six years ago. I became wary of the software's new owners being moneygrubbing greedheads, with no interest in building something maintainable and manageable. All new code they've written since buying vBullletin has been terrible. More oriented around making them money than supporting the millions of people who depend on their software. And now everything's going to shit, and it's a major issue for forum sites everywhere.

So I suppose I will brag about having gotten that right; but the point is, whenever we move to any new forum software, we will definitely not be running vBulletin.

Not that it's necessary to change, users hate change, but it's possible somebody could write some forum software that's truly innovative and good, and that could be cool for us to share.

Scoop is good, and will probably remain in the hands of people who care how well it works, but it would be a MAJOR change, and not necessarily completely compatible with what we have here.

Wise words.

I keep getting sales calls from my mobile phone provider, trying to get me to upgrade to a new phone, now that my iPhone4 is paid for. I did it once to get my mum a new smart phone(Xperia S on a very cheap deal), but now that's me and her sorted. I don't need to upgrade my phone. It works just as well now as it did when I got three years ago, or thereabouts. Aside from the camera function...but any phone that comes into my possession will end up with a fucked up camera lens within months anyway.

I feel the same about pretty much all software. Word and Excel were just fine several versions ago. And explorer and windoze... mutter mutter moan moan whinge whinge, no computer for two days and only a brief window of co-operation tonight before we have to try again to fix the stupid thing......
