flying solo

SWMBO's spring semester has started and I made a push for the inchlet and me to stay home on the days SW teaches. (fri, sat) This saves 2/3 of us from a three hour drive each way and a couple of stayover nights at our "crash pad"

SW wasn't too keen since inchlet is still "night nursing" and occasionally during the day. SW and Inch have been getting on each other's nerves a lot lately and I sensed that they needed apart time, that a lot of his tears and drama were him "playing" her, and probably looking more for reassurance that she was still there, despite her internal wish, clear to me and probably him, for some space.

This is also somewhat compounded by a small control freak streak, including, but not limited to all things inch. I suspected that her reticence to go along with this plan was in part not wanting to lose her position as the most important thing in the inch's life, even if it was chafing her. The other part, stated by her was that irreparable harm would be done to inch's fragile psyche by missing a night nursing session.

You can see that I needed to step up and reel her in, usually I am a let people amke their own mistakes and figure it out.

So the first solo night went by with inch waking up once and me asking him if he wanted water. Yes. drink, back to sleep.

At 2:00am he awoke and asked where mom was. "In the city teaching."
"oh. I want to read a book."
"Yes, we'll read a book when the sun rises. Now we're going back to bed."
A minute of tears.
"Do you want water or some animal cookies?" (This is not a regular thing. I wasn't going to brush them again and risk really waking him up and I wasn't going to go make warm milk and honey, so...)

He took two cookies and held them and fell asleep without eating them.

Things went great yesterday, helped in part by a visit to my friend's shop where they were sawing logs with a portable bandsaw mill. So far today also things are going pretty well. Down for his naps without much fuss. Though today he stuck his hands down my shirt and asked, just to be sure, if I had any "dowas" (boobs)

"nope, you're out of luck." Whatever. We read jemima puddle duck, country mouse, and flopsy bunnies and took big bear to bed.

SWMBO seemed at once relieved and crestfallen that it went so well.

There are, however, still several hours before her return.
