2/19/2006: Deer rescue

This successful deer rescue is presented with apologies for missing Friday, when the Cellar's server was in the midst of a move.

capnhowdy  Sunday Feb 19 11:48 AM

If they're not careful, someone will be rescueing them from the deer. These things can be dangerous. This one, fortunately doesn't appear to have a lot of spunk left in him.

wolf  Sunday Feb 19 01:43 PM

Why "rescue" something that you're just going to toss on the barbecue anyway?

chrisinhouston  Sunday Feb 19 03:19 PM

What's wrong with this picture? 3 men in a boat all on one side, no one wearing a life jacket and the boat is listing to the side because of the imbalanced load. If they aren't careful them may all be in the drink with bambi and what's more, capsized aluminum boats don't have much floatation so I think the boat would go down in a wink.

Leah  Sunday Feb 19 04:04 PM

The guy in the middle of the boat looks more like a hunter. Seems to me that the hunters deer got away and his mates are helping him retrieve it. Swim little deer, swim.

Jordon  Sunday Feb 19 06:38 PM

In a rescue situation like this, you find two kinds of people: those who would try to save a life, and those who would stand there and let it die.

Kobe deer.
A few beers, a massage, then who knows...?

wolf  Sunday Feb 19 10:19 PM

Maybe you'll get lucky.

This image makes that little childhood ditty go around and around in my head; "Rub a dub dub, 3 men in a tub and who do you think they be?"

I'm trying to create a new ending with something about "fat boy, Billy Bob and Bubba" but the rhyming sort of needs work and I haven' yet figured out how to get the deer into it.

"Rub a dub dub, 3 men in a tub and who do you think they be?"
It's Fat Boy, Billy Bob and Bubba, tipping the tub, deer me.

Karenv  Monday Feb 20 10:41 AM

Why in the world would a deer need rescue from the water? The deer along the Columbia River manage a mile-wide river with a substantial current. Deer can swim. Maybe they can't pull a metal tub with three people, but otherwise they should be fine.

seakdivers  Monday Feb 20 02:14 PM

Karen, that was my initial thought as well, but after looking closer at the picture it appears that the deer is surrounded by ice. It was probably walking along and fell through.

Saraax  Monday Feb 20 03:08 PM

That deer looks seriously pissed off.

Good eye. I hadn't even noticed the ice.

chrisinhouston  Monday Feb 20 04:39 PM

Several of my uncles live in rural parts of Minnesota. One of my uncles was fishing on the snake river just before the opening of deer season and had just cast his line and lure out about 50 feet from where he was wading and a big buck crashed through the brush and jumped into the river to swim across. He encountered the fishing line and thrashed around getting it all tangled up in his antlers, my uncle said he could see his bright lure dangling there and then the deer bolted out of the water along with about 100 yards of line that he peeled off of the reel. The line broke and he was gone. My uncle said he always wondered if any hunter bagged that deer and had it been reported in the news he would have asked for his lure back.

In looking again, I see no definite ice. Plenty of cold grey water. But even if there is some, there is water and the deer is likely to be a faster swimmer than that contraption, so they are increasing the likelihood of hypothermia.

xoxoxoBruce  Tuesday Feb 21 04:36 PM

I think at least the foreground is ice.

glatt  Tuesday Feb 21 04:46 PM

These guys are lucky they didn't swamp the boat. They are dangerously close to tipping one of the sides under the surface of the water.

Cold water will kill them just as fast as the deer. Cotton hoodie notwithstanding.

xoxoxoBruce  Tuesday Feb 21 04:56 PM

Anybody know what state that boat is registered in?

glatt  Tuesday Feb 21 05:08 PM

You know, looking at that picture a little more closely, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't even own the boat. It's a rowboat, and they are using an old dilapadated canoe paddle. They also aren't wearing pfds. Everything screams haste. I bet the drain plug isn't even secured.

They were probably on the shore, saw a deer go though the ice, and grabbed the nearest boat they could find. Saw it had no oars, and started looking around for something to row with. Who needs a life jacket? We won't end up in the water.

They are foolish, but appear to be good hearted.

capnhowdy  Tuesday Feb 21 06:06 PM

I'll bet there were a couple of foxes standing on the bank in tears with erect nipples.

Can you say: TESTOSTERONE? Just a thought.

wolf  Wednesday Feb 22 02:09 AM

Bambi ruined this country.

Sun_Sparkz  Wednesday Feb 22 05:12 AM

How fantastic that three grown men would take the time, effort and gold heartedness to save a beautiful creatures life. i'm sending all three of them Goooood vibes tonight.
