4/29/2006: Flaming suicide in Zagreb

This WaPo image isn't all that striking until you read the official caption:

Quote:
Croation war veteran Dragan Prebeg, 35, catches fire in his car after pouring gasoline on himself to commit suicide in a protest against tax authorities in Zagreb. Prebeg, the father of six children, died later in a local hospital.
But he didn't take any tax authorities with him. Not very well thought-out.

THE Most. Goes faster if you inhale the flames, crisping the lungs. Not well thought through.

Trilby  Saturday Apr 29 04:59 PM

What an asshole. He had six kids to take care of--JERK.

gaidin  Saturday Apr 29 05:25 PM

honestly if you wanna make your point by killing yourself you need to rethink your strategy

Stress Puppy  Saturday Apr 29 05:46 PM

I've read in several places that burning do death isn't actually all that painful, since in a nasty fire your nerves are going to be one of the first things to go. Take that with as many grains of salt as you wish.

linknoid  Saturday Apr 29 07:11 PM

My aunt got burned pretty bad when she was younger, trying to teach her kids about fire safety. She said the burning didn't really hurt, it was the healing afterwards that was painful.

it looks like the pressure in the car has nearly blown out the back door. it seems slightly ajar up the top.

oh and im sure he ruined his best jacket

Pancake Man  Sunday Apr 30 01:35 PM

Wouldn't be so bad, except he ate Taco Bell just an hour before.

tippy  Monday May 1 05:56 AM

of all the ways to go, if you ahve petorl and a car surely exhaust fules would be better, but I'm presuming he wanted to make a point.

but who took the picture??

Ridgeplate  Monday May 1 11:33 AM

I wonder if we could get a link to the news site that posted this. I mean, it *looks* real, but I cannot help but be a bit suspicious of it. I have found evidence of the event, but I'm unable to track the photo down. I won't call go so far as to call shenanigans, but it echo's of photoshop.

If anyone can find a link, please post it.

mrnoodle  Monday May 1 05:55 PM

here's a link

looks legit. He was alive afterwards -- they pulled him out and doused him, but he later succumbed to his wounds.

capnhowdy  Monday May 1 08:40 PM

If he'd lived they would have prosecuted him.

xoxoxoBruce  Monday May 1 09:02 PM

That picture came from the Washington Post photo section for April 28th.

taraneko  Tuesday May 2 06:38 AM

It's not Photoshop'ed, Ridgeplate!

Ridgeplate  Tuesday May 2 10:16 AM

Outstanding. Thanks for the confirmation, all.
It's lousy that I've become so jaded. I suppose I've just been lied to too many times to believe everything I see on the first go-round.

It seems he was in Zagreb, like having a car where doors don't really shut is normal in a city like Zagreb, and where people only have one jacket...

xoxoxoBruce  Tuesday May 2 04:33 PM

Welcome to the Cellar, taraneko.
Thanks for the link.
