February 7, 2007: Eternal embrace

Quote:
"I am so thrilled at this find. I have been involved in lots of digs all over Italy but nothing has excited me as much as this."

"I've been doing this job for 25 years. I've done digs at Pompeii, all the famous sites.

"But I've never been so moved because this is the discovery of something special."
That's lead archaeologist Elena Menotti, describing this find: of a couple who have been embracing each other for over 5000 years.

They were buried together during the Neolithic peroid, near Mantua, Italy - and they were just discovered yesterday.

But it's not completely romantic:

Quote:
One theory being examined is that the man was killed and the woman then sacrificed so that his soul would be accompanied in the after life.

Daily Mail story via Spluch and Neatorama

I saw this when I first woke up on Yahoo! Oh, the ancient Etruscans. Wait, not Etruscans that's too recent. Oh, nevermind.

Sheldonrs  Wednesday Feb 7 12:40 PM

Maybe they were really strangeling eachother.

Not completely, but a little bit maybe?
Nothing says I Love You like being sacrificed I guess.

The bed breath must be horrible.

A scene from Babylon 5, where two people strangle each other.

xoxoxoBruce  Wednesday Feb 7 03:19 PM

He was grabbing her by the throat and she was kneeing him in the groin when the bus hit them. Don't these archaeologists know anything.

No wonder they felt they were well matched lovers...... overbite on the right and underbite on the left.....perfect together.

Trilby  Wednesday Feb 7 03:29 PM

I wonder if it's too late to get that printed for Valentine's Day?

rkzenrage  Wednesday Feb 7 03:34 PM

Same city of Romeo & Juliet.

Maybe they were Jewish. If they were having sex when they died, that would be her nail file. :-)

The Daily Mail link says Mr. Skinny on the left has an arrow in his spine, and the Miz has an arrowhead in her side. This romance did not end well.

Makes me think of the last scene of that movie "The War of the Roses".

Seriously though, Ick. Archaeologists might get all weepy and runny inside as they yank these bones out of the ground, and then salivate over the publicity, but I wish they'd cover 'em up again and go spend their grant money elsewhere. Poor ol' bones .

Hopefully these two will get to share a drawer in some museum attic. Maybe the curators will hear 'em rustlin' around in there.

I understand your dedication to the internet, it's a wonderful resource... but do you really want to sleep in it?
How do you get any rest; all that yabber, yabber, yabber.

Silly joke, badly stated.
My apologies.
Still, it'd have to be a pretty big book before I could snooze on just one page.
Who's up for some sardines on toast?
Me please.

freshnesschronic  Thursday Feb 8 12:13 AM

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hahaha i only meant that after I wake up, turn on comp, get on Mozilla; it was the headline for my homepage. And I've never had sardines.

Nary a single sardine?
BuhBuhBut...

Ooh, hey, I was about to say that we'd finally reached food post point, but I'd forgotton LabRats' lovely jerky post.
Only one thing better than sardines, and that's jerky.

SPUCK  Thursday Feb 8 04:07 AM
