July 13, 2007: Fox steals eggs

xoB points us to this lovely set of pics and a complete story found at the Daily Mail, of a fox who finds and steals geese eggs.

I've only included a few of the 10 shots found there, well worth the visit. The fox has to carefully pick the egg up without smashing it, sneak away, and swim through 40 meters of pond... it turns out, has an incentive:

The little ones waiting to be fed. Head to the Mail for more shots and the full story.

How can an egg eat those scrumptious looking foxlets?

Let's see, how does the riddle go? You have to get a fox and five eggs across the pond in your boat. You can only carry two passengers at a time, but can't leave the fox alone with the eggs. Hmmm. No, I can't get more than four of the eggs across without the fox eating one.

She even hid one for herself which she ate after feeding her family.
Smart... the little beggars will eat you out of house and home, given half a chance.

I think you leave a goose in there somewhere. Then the fox eats the goose and forgets all about the darn eggs.

Yumm, fox and eggs. A breakfast of champions. And the fox even brings her own eggs for the cooking.

If she's stealing Canadian goose eggs, I say we promote her and hire a few more. Damn geese.

They were Canadian Geese! Go Foxy!

Shawnee123  Friday Jul 13 12:06 PM

Everyone I know hates the geese. I feel sorry for the underfowl.

glatt  Friday Jul 13 12:13 PM

There were a bunch of them at a picnic area in Great Falls MD a few weeks ago, and people at the other end of the picnic area were feeding them. The damn things were so brazen, I had to walk around with my arms outstretched, to chase them away from our table. Flying rats.

Apparently there are different populations of them, and they are still protected because some of the populations are in decline. Around here, there's no shortage of them.

What does the fox say?

"Eggs, poached, thanks."

Sheldonrs  Thursday Oct 31 04:58 PM

"Take care the foxes. The little ones that spoil the vines. For our vines have tender grapes."

We just hate what they leave behind.

I love hearing them and watching them fly overhead.
