August 24, 2007: Two-faced cow

Meet Blinky. The Sun has the details on this beast, who is called Blinky because all four eyes blink at the same time. Both heads appear to be functional as she will drink from two bottles at the same time. What you have there is one neck two ears, as normal, but then two noses and mouths, and four eyes.

Quote:
Vet Dr Pete Kistler, who examined Blinky, said: "It's a rare, freaky thing."

He said he didn't know whether the deformity was genetic or developmental.

Dr Kistler added that he suspects Blinky also has a deformity in her brain because she can't stand up.

The calf will probably need to be put down because fluid and bacteria will invade her lungs, he said.

But Mr Hamstra said he will continue to care for Blinky for as long as he can.

"It would be nice to keep her alive," he said.

I used to hang out with that cow. Then one day, she told Shelly that Maria said that Tom went out with Gina, and Frank was pissed at ME. Can you believe it? Two faced bitch!

freshnesschronic  Friday Aug 24 10:31 AM

Blinky has one brain right? So it's technically one cow, not co-joined calves?

Deuce  Friday Aug 24 10:55 AM

Four-eyes... Bet she got teased a lot in the feed pens.

Deuce  Friday Aug 24 10:57 AM

Chu loooking a' me? Ahr JU lookin at **ME**?!!

Don't fret, Mr Hamstra, those double headers drag on forever.

hampor  Friday Aug 24 03:18 PM

I'm not sure how to break the news, but....

The cow died a couple days ago. It was suffering lung problems.

Sheldonrs  Friday Aug 24 05:44 PM

Why is a two faced cow dying any more sad than all the one faced ones resting comfortably on the sesame seed bun?

Not that I mind a burger sometimes. :-)

Saphyre  Friday Aug 24 06:04 PM

Would I be flagging down the Hellbound bus if I asked whether the momma had fed on Chinese grain?

hampor  Friday Aug 24 06:26 PM

How sad?

It is sadder, but it's not clear whether the event should be exactly twice as sad, or maybe just 10% sadder.

It was never able to stand up and survived less than a day.

Actually, that's a good question. Why is it that we are drawn to relate to, sympathise with this calf? I think part of it is knowing we are looking at a newly born creature that isn't going to survive. The cows we kill for food have lived at least some of their lives. There is something deeply saddening about something trying to live and never standing a chance.

And that's the other thing that draws us, I think. That calf represents the full force of a desire for life and for survival. It shouldn't have survived to be born, yet it did. Despite everything against it, it made it into the air. And we know, looking at that picture, we are looking at that drive to live...and we are equally looking at the hopelessness of that drive in this instance. It barely tasted the air, but taste it it did.

Another disturbing aspect of pictures like that and also the cyclops kitten, comes when you read the article and become aware of the health problems that go with such deformity. We read the article and know that the new born creature we are looking at is suffering, and will never know anything but that suffering.

Because they aren't here.

busterb  Friday Aug 24 10:04 PM

The calf will be graded as veal, which cost more IMHO.

When I saw the header "Two Faced Cow", I thought it was a Hillary Clinton thread.

Probably just as well. One day, both heads would've tried to lick its ass, and it would have split down the middle.

Shawnee123  Saturday Aug 25 09:09 AM

and the cow cracked over the moon?

morie  Saturday Aug 25 10:45 AM

"Would I be flagging down the Hellbound bus if I asked whether the momma had fed on Chinese grain?"

that could be the reason. or equally likely is that she was fed on genetically modified grain that american companies like monsanto are trying to force on the rest of the world. also possible is that the feed additives and hormones that animals are now pumped full of had this unexpected effect.

I think these kind of birth defects have happened for ever. That's how we've evolved from goo. Well, most of us have evolved.

There would be advantages to having an extra pair of eyes and a few other spare parts.

yeah, except this was one defect that definitely did not suite evolution. and somehow, i think evolution was much slower. i mean, who wakes up the next morning to discover they have two noses and two mouths???

and tell me please, would you want to sleep with someone who had two mouths and two noses? so which bull would do that deformed cow and carry on this defect, thereby allowing the species to carry on?

xoxoxoBruce  Sunday Aug 26 07:43 AM

The bull eschews the missionary position.

Shawnee123  Monday Aug 27 10:10 AM

I never saw a two-faced cow
I never hope to see one
But I can tell you anyhow
I'd rather see than eat one.
