December 23, 2007: Useful Tattoo

From Scienceblogs.

Quote:
"My right forearm has a 8" ruler on it that I use for everything from measuring PVC diameter to wire lengths. My background is in embedded hardware design, but I choose to spend my time doing experimental building, transportation, and energy these days. The tattoo gets used daily."--Mikey
I imagine it would be handy for settling bar bets and locker room boasts.
I'm thinking of having cup sizes tattooed on my hand.

Also, Flickr has two pages of tattoos on science geeks.

Fantastic tats in his series. The host also wrote an acalimed book about evolution.

Yea, but what if he had the retractable slide ruler kind?

xoxoxoBruce  Sunday Dec 23 10:53 AM

Ouch... ouch... ouch...

Cloud  Sunday Dec 23 12:01 PM

very cool. Did you see the Origin of Species one from a Darwin sketch?

Thanks for posting.

SteveDallas  Sunday Dec 23 02:55 PM

You could get logarithmic scales done on each arm, and then use them together as a slide rule.

Scriveyn  Sunday Dec 23 04:12 PM

Metric system rulez!

Sundae  Monday Dec 24 11:47 AM

I tried to guess what it was before clicking on the thread.
I failed.

Best I came up with was personal details on someone with a lifelong condition like a fatal allergy, diabetes or other So that if they pass out when they aren't with friends/ family, people will know what to do.

The ruler is way cooller though.
But damn you Bruce. Looking at those amazing tattoos has made me want another one. Just wow.

Gravdigr  Monday Dec 24 12:33 PM

Somewhere on the internet, someone has that tattoo, is making a fist, and using the tat as a depth gauge.

Give some people an inch...

Undertoad  Wednesday Jan 2 01:53 AM

Bruce's IotD "useful tattoo" is currently front-page at reddit.com. Well done xoB!

xoxoxoBruce  Wednesday Jan 2 02:41 AM

Is that why things were running so slowly tonight?

monster  Wednesday Jan 2 05:06 PM

and in the less cerebral tattoo world....

Spexxvet  Wednesday Jan 2 06:06 PM

Somewhere, I saw a picture of a ruler tattoo on a woman's inner thigh, but with the zero up at her crotch.

BrianR  Friday Jan 11 05:35 PM

I know a guy who is into fisting who has one starting at his proximate knuckle and goes to his elbow.

Kingswood  Tuesday Jan 22 10:36 PM

This is reason #174 why Americans resist metrification. Or maybe his left arm is metric.
