April 9, 2008: Short Stuff

Quote:
At first glance, she appears to be a month-old baby, sitting in her mother’s lap. But make no mistake; Jyoti Amge is a 15-year-old schoolgirl.

Perhaps the world’s smallest girl at 23.5 inches, or just about two feet, in height, weighing barely 5.25 kg, Jyoti has Achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism.

“I am also the world’s happiest person,” she chuckles. “People, my friends and family – everybody showers love on me, and I am happy to be what I am.”

She makes no secret of the fact that she enjoys and loves the kind of attention she gets. “May be it will bring name and fame to me and my family,” she feels. The teenager, who studies at Bharatiya Vidya Niketan Higher Primary School in seventh standard, stopped growing a few months after her birth, her parents say.

Aware of the celebrity status that her height has brought her, Jyoti wants to give acting a shot. “I wish to become an actress,” she says, confident of making it to the dream world of Bollywood some day. She plans to take acting lessons soon.

Now there, is a high maintenance girlfriend.

Primordial dwarfism. I watched a programme on it a while back (and someone responded to say they'd seen it too). The heartbreaking thing is that they have such short lives and no chance of reproduction.

There's a dirty joke to be made here someplace.

I hope she makes it to Bollywood. She will probably have a very short career and make little impact on the industry.

SteveDallas  Wednesday Apr 9 03:12 PM

At least nobody has been tasteless enough to point out that she'd probably fit into that bookbag.

sweetwater  Wednesday Apr 9 03:39 PM

~or have a career with Jeff Dunham.
But it's nice that she is so happy anyway.

WillieO  Wednesday Apr 9 04:03 PM

She's so cute.....I'm nuts over her!

Welcome! Time for your quiz. Now, where's Lumberjim?

Leah  Wednesday Apr 9 10:32 PM

Oh, she's as cute as a button and as small as one.

rupip  Thursday Apr 10 02:45 AM

I like her tie!! - down to her knees...

this will be the next business-fashion-trend...

Kumbulu  Thursday Apr 10 05:56 AM

She has Achondroplasia, not Primordial Dwarfism. She will have a relatively normal lifespan and may be able to carry and give birth to children.

I appreciate that the article names her dwarfism as Achondroplasia, but it seems hard to accept. She doesn't have the typical facial features or the disproportionate limbs. Also a little checking on the internet suggests that the typical height of someone with Achondroplasia is 4 foot.

I admit I made my own diagnosis based on her proportionate stature and diminutive height. However I'm willing to accept I was wrong, as she seems confident of a long life and would surely have been advised otherwise if she had Primordial Dwarfism. I wouldn't be confident about her ability to bear children however, pureply from a logistics point of view.

Imigo Jones  Thursday Apr 10 07:31 PM

The pic is deceptive. She'd be about as tall as her classmates if she were wearing shoes like them.

monster  Thursday Apr 10 08:22 PM

It's photoshopped. I'll be back with a recipe later.

xoxoxoBruce  Thursday Apr 10 10:48 PM

Welcome to the Cellar, Imigo.

Trilby  Friday Apr 11 04:34 AM

A big heart in a tiny girl. What a great attitude.

Since she's in high-school, I'm betting she's been in that bag. More than once.
