April 12, 2008: Pedal Powered Wheelchair

At first I thought it was a bad joke.
Wouldn't someone be in a wheelchair because they couldn't use their legs?
According to the UK distributer;

Quote:
a clamp-on cycle for wheelchair users enabling opportunities for exercise or rehabilitation to short or long term wheelchair users.
I never thought of that. I guess I'd fallen into the stereotype trap, of just seeing all people in wheelchairs having the same (dis)ability.

does it come with one of those big long flexible flag staffs and baseball card for the spokes?

TheMercenary  Saturday Apr 12 07:11 PM

Just don't push him down a hill unattended. It could become ugly quick.

xoxoxoBruce  Sunday Apr 13 12:14 AM

No problem, he's got brakes.

Gravdigr  Sunday Apr 13 03:59 PM

I just got this crazy image in my head of a couple of kids at the family reunion pushing Aunt Ethel, 100 yrs old, really really fast in this wheelchair/pedal rehab thing, and her skinny 100 yr old legs pumping up and down like crazy.

So you're saying the poor guy's condition would be going downhill fast?!

First funny Bruce. Second this is the most retarded thing I have seen in awhile.

A few bike designs for wheelchair riders who can't work the pedals themselves

Kinda a sidecar for spudcon's Heck's Grandpas:

Next, riding in the front!

I don't see how these ones are steered without handlebars--I guess just by pushing on that bar on the back of the chair (like steering a lawn mower):

Doesn't count as a wheelchair bicycle, but this bicycle taxi does seem to confirm the steering speculation re the previous pics:

Replace the bicycle taxi's passenger seat with one of these, though, and you do get a wheelchair bicycle, after all (note "cowcatcher" in front to latch into taxi's DOT-mandated safety bar):

spudcon  Saturday Apr 19 06:18 PM

Isn't that Bill O' Reilly hauling Madelyn Albright?

Sundae  Saturday Apr 19 08:13 PM

Hey. well researched Imigo.
I love the idea that sporty types can include disabled loved ones.

She's watching the GPS, so they don't get lost.
