August 25, 2008: Chinese market stall

That's not pork. Or beef. Or chicken. Or fish.

But it's definitely fresh!

(This is first Pic o' Day submission and I'm not sure if I did it right.)

BigV  Monday Aug 25 05:23 PM

Ew. Do. Not. Want.

Long pig--gross!

lookout123  Monday Aug 25 05:47 PM

Sit. Stay. They sure are easy to train.

Good thing its not friday, I guess.

sweetwater  Monday Aug 25 05:53 PM

I did not need to be reminded of that practice. The title should have warned me off but I was too curious.

Aliantha  Monday Aug 25 06:00 PM

Although I find the idea of eating dog meat revolting, it's really only a matter of what you're used to culturally.

Actually, here's a funny story I saw on Rove on Sunday night. A couple of well known comedians, Hamish and Andy, were in Bejing doing all sorts of stupid stuff, and one of them was to go to a restaraunt which served all sorts of animal penis. One of the dishes was dog penis. They funny part about it was watching them trying to figure out what sort of penis they were eating.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that.

KillerSquirrel  Monday Aug 25 06:21 PM

I don't know what I find more amusing - the guy's smile or the handbag hanging off the meat hook.

BigV  Monday Aug 25 06:42 PM

*Camera bag*. I have the same bag at home. Smile is creepy, though... must be a cat person.

Welcome, KillerSquirrel.

That is not Long Pig. Long pig is ... longer. And rarer. And actually illegal.

lumberjim  Monday Aug 25 08:41 PM

I can tell a lot about a person from their face, and the expression on it. I'll tell you this:

That guy is an asshole. truly

Trilby  Monday Aug 25 08:57 PM

In some remote cultures (maybe not now, but recently) it was totally OK to eat long-pig. So. If that's part of their culture, why shouldn't they be allowed to practice it? Who are WE to impose our rules on THEM? Who are we to say ethnic cleansing isn't wrong? If a country hates a certain group of inferior or non-indigenous people, shouldn't they be, culturally speaking, allowed to keep their culture "pure"? If it is Islamic law to kill your daughter for flirting or having premarital sex or whatever....if that is their CULTURE, they should continue with impunity. What of the African tribes who practice clitorectomy as part of their culture? Who the HELL are we to try to stop it???

many questions come up when we are talking "culture"

ZenGum  Monday Aug 25 08:57 PM

The smile looks to me more like "I'm very nervous and uncomfortable here but I don't want to show it because it might offend the guy with the bloody meat cleaver who is looking at me in a business-like way..."

ZenGum  Monday Aug 25 08:59 PM

Also, I agree with Ali that our hang-ups about eating dog are mostly cultural. I also have hangups about hygiene, refrigeration, humane killing of food animals and lots of other cissy things like that.
What a wimp.

I guess it's just all what you're brought up with and used to. C'est la vie!

you do your thing and I'll do mine. Keep your nose out of it!

ZenGum  Monday Aug 25 09:08 PM

C'est la vie? C'est la morte!

Sheldonrs  Monday Aug 25 09:10 PM

Man's best dinner.

Trilby  Monday Aug 25 09:12 PM

Bon Appetit!

Wonder what kind of sauce goes with dog? And what is a proper side dish?
Cat? Muskrat? monkey brains!

Hey, if I were hungry enough...I just might eat a cellarite with fava beans and a nice Chianti, FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Aliantha  Monday Aug 25 09:42 PM

If I were hungry enough I might eat haggis or black pudding...but it'd still probably have to be a few more days after that before I'd consider eating dog.

Some people eat some strange stuff. Even deep fried bugs.

Aliantha  Monday Aug 25 09:42 PM

or guinea pigs

jinx  Monday Aug 25 09:51 PM

Here's an interesting article that talks about the ban on dog meat dishes in certain restaurants during the olympics... and about how dog, like rat, is a winter meat, that warms the blood and helps with circulation.

I used to get it shishkabobbed with barbecue sauce in the Philippines. Tasted pretty good. Of course, I was drunk most of the time I was there.

smee  Monday Aug 25 10:10 PM

not for me

my first post - but might be my last too as will probably have to give up IOTD after being completely grossed out by that - especially the guy

Aliantha  Monday Aug 25 10:13 PM

Welcome smee. There's lots of good threads to look at. Sometimes IOTD isn't the greatest place to begin (in my opinion) but I guess it's often interesting. You can get some good recipes too.

I agree with you mostly, except for the female genital mutilation. The problem with that is how it's done... Mother's often tempt young girls out the house with promises of treats/etc and the next thing the young girl knows, people are holding her down and slicing her clitoris off, sometimes with a piece of glass. This procedure is rarely down with any anesthesia or pain killers... And the whole reason for it is to make sex painful/unpleasurable for women so their husbands can be sure they won't cheat. This practice makes me very sad. It's unlike other cultural things because there is no avoiding it with good behavior. There is no choice. You can get it done in America, but you have to be an adult. Considering I'm a woman who very much appreciates her clitoris, it breaks my heart to think of all the women who have it taken away.

squirell nutkin  Monday Aug 25 10:38 PM

Just to clarify things BigV and Bri, in case you weren't aware, long pig or long pork is humid beings, not doggies.

Killer squirrel, nice spelling job! Are you my sister?

Trilby  Monday Aug 25 10:39 PM

Hi Babs, and welcome

Now---may I ask you if you think it's ok to kill a daughter who flirts/has premarital sex/doesn't cover up correctly/cannot walk the street without a male relative? You see, that is all extremely foreign to my way of thinking but you, being from UAE, might appreciate the security it brings. But, don't you think KILLING someone for flirting or being raped (a thing that happens against the girl/woman's wishes and is violent and evil) for "family honor" is a thing that makes you feel secure? Nobody asks for rape---yet the men seem to get off and the victim is made to suffer. Please help me to understand this as it is a major puzzle for me.

I really appreciate your point of view on this.

I am very aware of that. I DID watch Gilligan's Island, you know! There were cannibals on "the other side of the island"

Any genital mutilation is out of the question unless you are an insane adult, then it's ok to do to your own personal self. Otherwise, no cutting of the happy parts!

Just imagine the reaction if you were to say "Oh, I've got a great idea! Let's cut the end of your penis off. That would be so awesome and spiritual and clean and god wants that for you too! While we're at it, let's not just remove your clitoris, but let's sew your cooch practically closed."

That shit is the genital equivalent of suicide bombing. Any adult that would entice a kid with candy or anything else to have that done is seriously brainwashed.

footbinding, head flattening, public school, need I go on?

Aliantha  Monday Aug 25 10:48 PM

What's wrong with public school?

What's right with it? (In the US?)

Aliantha  Monday Aug 25 10:52 PM

Kids learn to read there. That's a skill even US kids could use I'm sure. That's the first thing that comes to mind. I'm sure there are plenty more good things about public education too.

Anyway, it's been argued before in more appropriate threads.

squirell nutkin  Monday Aug 25 11:02 PM

The reason kids in the US are illiterate is because they go to public schools.

D'uh

Babs  Monday Aug 25 11:27 PM

Hello to you too! I've been on iotd for years now and finally got around to creating an account...

I am American and have just been living and working as an expat in the UAE for the last two years. I am not Muslim.
The UAE is nothing like Saudi Arabia or other strict Islamic countries. Yes, Islam is still the national religion, but there are a lot of differences between here and places like Saudi Arabia: you are allowed to practice other religions here as long as you don't try to push your views on others (wish they had that rule in the States), women can drive as long as they have permission from their sponser to get a license(like in most countries), you can buy pork and alcohol, you can go out to night clubs and get drunk, you can wear bikinis on the beach, you can wear pretty much anything you could wear in the States in public (obviously the more revealing the more stares you are going to get)... The list goes on and on.
As far as killing your daughter for flirting or having premarital sex, that's not how it is here (though of course very strict Muslims could still kill their kids for anything in their own homes I'm sure, but I've never heard of that happening here, not to say it doesn't.). If we are talking about Emirati's, the actual locals here, they are WAY different than what you would expect. If a local gets pregnant via premarital sex, they can get an abortion. It is done in a hospital and everything is kept hush-hush, but they can. If anyone else gets pregnant via premarital sex, they are sent back to their host nation.
I've done a lot of research on rapes in this country after a teenage boy got taken to the desert and raped a few months ago. They don't kill you for stuff like that here. They try to have a more liberal view on things. I'm going to attach two links... One about the rape, and one about what you can and cannot do here. Hopefully that helps answer some of your questions.
And if it wasn't clear, I wholeheartedly agree with you about what absolute [!!??!?!!] it is the way a lot of these strict Muslims act... Did you hear about the beauty pagent woman that got prego, wasn't married, and was sent to be stoned after she finished nursing her baby? I forget where that was... Somewhere in Africa I think. She still told people not to boycott the pagent.

That guy's smile is saying "This is one of the funniest sights I've ever seen: There are a few dozen Chinese people standing around who have never seen a white person in their life. Now they suddenly see two of us, in the same day, and are asking themselves, 'Why on Earth would anybody would want to take a picture in a boring old food market? And why is the American girl with the camera looking so queasy?' "

Sorry, lumberjim, but you're completely mistaken this time. Truly.

(By the way, German Shepherd is stringy.)

Trilby  Tuesday Aug 26 02:00 AM

Ah, I can see newtimer is experienced in this "cuisine" and unless you were crashed in the Andes and had no other food, I don't want to know you.

Lj is right about that asshole guy, and lemme tell ya, Lj KNOWS from assholes.

xoxoxoBruce  Tuesday Aug 26 07:20 AM

I read somewhere, "The Chinese eat everything with four legs, except tables, and everything that flies, except airplanes."

Hey, everything goes with rice.

DanaC  Tuesday Aug 26 08:00 AM

I keep having to do a slight mental adjustment each time the subject of 'public schools' comes up In England, a public school is a private school, they are synonymous. What Americans call a 'public' school, we call a state school.

xoxoxoBruce  Tuesday Aug 26 08:08 AM

That's a socialist plot to fool you.

If someone used the term 'state school' around here, I'd assume it was a euphemism for juvenile detention.

"Two countries divided by a common language".

See? shoulda stuck with the Gilligan reference. Everyone knows the Gilligan.
and you know, it was only supposed to be a three hour tour, a three hour tour! so...why did Ginger have all those evening gowns and I've yet to be able to make a banana cream pie out of just...bananas.

I think Gilligan provided the cream.

Tink's a baker from waaaay back, including our own wedding cake (chronicled elsewhere in these hallowed pages). Since then, especially lately, she really cooks.

And for the record, I was *NOT LYING*....

I was, more... recumbent.

We all got it the first time. It was just too fun to add the animation.
