May 18, 2009: Prison Babies

Not prison babes unfortunately, prison babies. Babies born to women in prison.

Quote:
A prison might sound like an odd place for a baby, but the Indiana Women’s Prison nursery is one of seven to open since the late 1990s. Studies have shown that allowing newborns to live with their mothers in jail, as opposed to being separated within 72 hours of birth; standard practice in states without nurseries, benefits children and reduces recidivism among offenders.

No need to worry about children raised in a prison environment...

Quote:
Inmates sentenced to longer than 18 months are ineligible for the nursery program because of limited space and rules preventing children older than a year and a half from participating.
Evidently, women having more than 18 months left on their sentence when they give birth have to do it the old way, which is give up the babies within 72 hours.

I've heard from the always-reliable souce, TV current affairs shows, that many poor women in the US commit crimes when pregnant so they can give birth in custody and receive free health care of a reasonable quality.
Can anyone confirm if this is true? It was quite a few years ago now.

xoxoxoBruce  Monday May 18 01:03 AM

I wouldn't buy that, they can get health care without going to jail.

ZenGum  Monday May 18 01:13 AM

I was (and still am) sceptical... maybe it was illegals? Merc, do you have specialist knowledge?

The Teapot  Monday May 18 04:31 AM

If its true then I tip my hat to those women. Its a bloody clever way of looking after your kids.

Bullitt  Monday May 18 08:25 AM

Tip your hat to leeches on society, nice.

ZenGum  Monday May 18 08:43 AM

So, back to the Prison Babies....

Recipe, anyone?

Or at least a prison themed nursery rhyme?

rock a bye baby
in the cell cot
when the bomb blows
the cell bars will rock
and when the bars break
the wire will fall
and out will run mama, bubba, and all.

dmg1969  Monday May 18 01:32 PM

They should have this written on that wall...

Twinkle, Twinkle little con
You're in jail because of mom
Behind the bars of steel she bore
And now you live a prisoner

Alluvial  Monday May 18 03:24 PM

Sounds like an interesting program.

When I was locked up, still in a local jail, there was more than one (several actually) guy who got himself put in jail for the winter, or simply because they were hungry. Bust a window, get a few weeks worth of free meals. Although now most jails around these parts charge you to keep you locked up. Twenty dollars a day in our county jail. Think about that! You get eleven months & twenty nine days, for stealing a CD, and on top of your fine you get to pay the jail $7280 when you get out.

But, yeah, I totally buy the bit about birthing them babies in jail.

I try not to go all holier than thou and supermom and shit but.......

I'm all for this and I don't give a shit if it means the women are breaking laws to get free heathcare. I don't care about the women. But the babies' best chance is to be breastfed and loved and paid attention to. What's the chance of those things happening if these women gave birth on the outside? I could go further and suggest if the mom won't breastfeed or shouldn't becuse of drugs/diseases etc, or if they don't care about the child then 72 hours may be too long..... The women may have fucked up, but the babies are Innocent American Citizens....

SPUCK  Tuesday May 19 04:33 AM

It's like my pastor says, there are no illegitimate babies, only illegitimate parents!

I can't cite anything for you but after many years in the business I can tell you in my experience this is not true. All women who are prego will get care and they don't need to be in custody to receive the care. They will get nearly the same care as everyone else who pays, has insurance or does not have insurance. There are some differences between the groups but it is not obvious to the patient usually, in the case of obstetrics. Now there is quite a bit of evidence that in the case of the illegal alien women who are prego that other factors exist, but they too receive the same care. In fact the patients with insurance will have significant limits on the care they receive, due to the financial aspect of managed care, not so with the medicaid patients, poor, or illegal aliens.

Science killed our God

Shawnee123  Saturday May 23 10:43 PM

Our god was blinded by science? I'm pretty sure that was glatt's fault.

Clodfobble  Sunday May 24 12:06 AM

Society is a leech
Nature is a whore
Time is a thief
Beauty is a bore

Science killed our God
But we've got a killer bod

lumberjim  Sunday May 24 12:13 AM

Society is a leech
Nature is a whore
Time is a thief
Beauty is a bore

Science killed our God
But we've got a killer bod
And this hand full of pills

spudcon  Sunday May 24 02:02 AM

Society is a leech
Nature is a whore
Time is a thief
Beauty is a bore

Science killed our God
But we've got a killer bod
And this hand full of pills
But we won't pay our bills

bluecuracao  Sunday May 24 02:04 AM

This is possibly the most depressing IoD ever.

Clodfobble  Sunday May 24 10:07 AM

I dunno, I think it's kind of hopeful. Think about it this way: they wouldn't bother to do the program if it didn't accomplish its goal of reducing recidivism. That means that at least some of those women will form a bond with their baby, grow a sense of responsibility to it, and get their shit together for the first time in their lives.

Talent is a curse
Your future will not last
Your bones will feed their garden
Their nursery a cell
