9/5/2002: Car bomb detonated
"Boom" is not really strong enough to describe the blast caused here. This car bomb was headed down a dirt road in Israel when volunteer police chased it. Eventually it was abandoned, at which point the police came and had it detonated on the spot. It consisted of a 1300 lb. bomb, along with two barrels of fuel and metal fragments, along with a cell phone attached to the trigger as a charge. Looks like it blew up real good.

Some of us who like a laugh -- surely a dwindling band in this increasingly grim and humorless world -- remember fondly the old "SCTV" series. One of the funniest skits on the show featured the late, great John Candy and Pittsburgh's own Joe Flaherty as hayseed film critics hosting "Farm Film Celebrity Blow-Up." Their bumpkin characters reviewed movies on the basis of only one criteria: whether people and things "blowed up real good." They loved films that had lots of explosions; they gave the thumbs-down to ones in which nothing blowed up at all. |

Actually the bad thing about this photo is there's no perspective. It could be an M80 for all we know.
