People have been thinking about the whole flying car problem for a while now. Here's another approach that people will say is "finally it". Built by a guy who saw that there were tiny little airports all over the place, but no rental cars at any of them. The "car" part can go up to 80 MPH.

Of course we all know that this has about 0.000000001% chance of becoming a consumer product.

I had a coworker who was a pilot. I remember that the biggest expense for airplanes, other than the cost due to manufacturers exposure to lawsuits, was maintenance. Airplanes, even private ones, have some of the most stringent inspection and maintenance requirements I have ever heard of. This makes sense when you consider how much damage a faulty airplane can do versus a car. Even if you could buy a flying car, the cost to satisfy FAA regulations each year would be terrible.
