June 16, 2010: RC & Moon Pie

Whenever we feature one of these, uh... unique cultural events, UT favors so much, it's always after the fact.
Now I can just hear the gnashing of teeth, tearing of cloth, and wailing in the night, because you missed them.

Cheer up Bunkie, you're getting advanced notice on this one.
This coming Saturday, June 19th, bounce your butt down to Bell Buckle, Tennessee, for the annual, "RC--MOON PIE FESTIVAL"

There will be a 10 mile run, parade, hog callin', contests/games, and of course the crowning of Queen Moon Pie and King RC Cola.

Looks to me like last year, the Miss Moon Pie wasn't thrilled with the Prince RC's attention to Miss Goo Goo Cluster.

wolf  Wednesday Jun 16 02:19 AM

I'm a little frightened by the Goo Goo Cluster Valkyrie.

Gravdigr  Wednesday Jun 16 03:06 AM

He's all Goo-Goo for her Clusters. I know I am.

I keep thinking, with her shiny sprayed-on look, that she looks like an inflatable doll..

HungLikeJesus  Wednesday Jun 16 09:36 AM

I'm in love with a rubber doll
I'm in love, she's got no brains at all

Trilby  Wednesday Jun 16 09:56 AM

You had me at 'hog callin' contest'

To be honest, you had me at Bell Buckle Tennessee.

The presence of moon pies and RC "Coca Cola" (That's the way you order one: "Gibme one of them RC coca colas ya got back there,") is just the icing on the cake.

newtimer  Wednesday Jun 16 10:10 AM

The first two things I noticed about this picture were the left one and the right one.

darkwing duck  Wednesday Jun 16 10:54 AM

Somehow, I just can't imagine "10 mile run" and "Moon Pie" at the same event.

squirell nutkin  Wednesday Jun 16 12:42 PM

I think that's Nirvana in that goo goo cluster outfit.

DanaC  Wednesday Jun 16 01:35 PM

wtf is a moonpie?

and wtf is a googoo cluster?

squirell nutkin  Wednesday Jun 16 02:04 PM

a moonpie is marshmallow sandwiched between two graham cracker cookies with the whole assembly being covered in chocolate. I'm not sure what you have over there that resembles a graham cracker.

Goo goo clusters are a regional thing. I;ve never had one, but they look like this: http://www.candyrageous.com/2009/01/goo-goo-cluster/

Trilby  Wednesday Jun 16 03:08 PM

addendum to squirrel's post: the moonpie is NOT as good as it sounds.

they are always stale and crumbly and taste like cardboard.

gtown  Wednesday Jun 16 03:34 PM

Goo Goo clusters are awesome, but in the "if round is funny" category of regional chocolately gooey treats my fave is the Bun Bar. Try a maple bar. They're fresh.

That's two movie quotes (or para quotes) layered in there (with caramel!), one you should know and one you won't, but that's ok, eat some chocolate and forget all about it.

Undertoad  Wednesday Jun 16 04:13 PM

You ate sand?

You are buying them from the wrong people, then. I don't find that with the moon pies I get around here.

Pete Zicato  Wednesday Jun 16 04:28 PM

A chocolate moon pie.

Also comes in vanilla, and banana.

limey  Wednesday Jun 16 04:54 PM

Moon Pie looks to me like a Wagon Wheel

Spexxvet  Wednesday Jun 16 05:06 PM

There were no Moon Pies when/where I grew up. We had Scooter Pies.

Pie  Wednesday Jun 16 05:10 PM

I don't hold with any of those pies.

gtown  Wednesday Jun 16 05:16 PM

Undertoad is correct of course, though he is a re-peat oh-fender.

Since the half-life of IOTD (and moon pies apparently) is short, I'll say the other quote (maple bars being fresh) is from the 80's flick Wild Life. No idea why that quote has stuck with me for so long, just tickled my donut shop fancy, I suppose.

hipshot  Wednesday Jun 16 05:59 PM

Pop a Moon Pie into the microwave for 10-12 seconds and it multiplies the goodness tenfold!

DanaC  Wednesday Jun 16 06:07 PM

The Moon Pies look a little like WagonWheels

The Goo Goo Clusters look awesome.

And the mess!

squirell nutkin  Wednesday Jun 16 06:14 PM

Yeah, I've got a googoo jones

HungLikeJesus  Wednesday Jun 16 07:55 PM

In Mexico, you know what they call Twinkies? "Los submarinos."

tombstone  Wednesday Jun 16 10:39 PM

To Brianna--Actually, it would probably be spoken thusly: "Gimme one 'er them thar RC co' colas 'n uh moon pie." The "i" in "pie" would be drawn out to become almost a second syllable. Another variation would be "co' colars". By the way, that RC king looks a helluva lot like my older grandson. Yeeeee--HAW!
