June 27th, 2014: Abandoned!

Niki Feijen is a dutch photographer who has found the special and spectacular subject of abandoned places. They consist of abandoned churches, factories, amusement parks, prisons, and estates.

I recommend checking out his site and then you can turn to google images and hunt down abandoned 'whatevers'. I suggest whatevers: boilers, water parks, amusement parks, trains, estates, and factories. (If you find a fascinating one please tell us!)

I've spent three evenings studying amazing places. A lot of them scream things like 'Half Life' scene and whatnot.

To start you off here's a link to the master's collection.

That looks like it should be a Pink Floyd album cover.

There are some beautiful photographs on the site. Thanks Spuck.

I've long been fascinated with old buildings. I would love to be one of those explorers. I did get to be one at the old abandoned town hotel...it was accessible through the back of the bar where I worked and we would sneak back there and give 'tours' occasionally. My town has since come to its senses and that beautiful old building is now our public library, with a rentable ballroom for events.

So I thought I'd mention this site...which I peruse from time to time. It's kind of a dream site for me...both in that I want to explore these places and also because many of my good dreams involve exploring room after room of interesting places:

I love stuff like this...which might sound creepy. I don't know...I love looking at photos of Pripyat and old hospitals and such.

I'm watching a show on Netflix...apparently it was on 3net (which is a 3D channel apparently only carried by DirecTV)...anyway, Forgotten Planet. There are like 8 episodes that include Pripyat; Picher, Oklahoma; and Detroit. A bit melodramatic, but good viewing.

This page has a lot of photos from folks exploring abandoned stuff in and around NEPA.
