March 21st, 2018: Expensive Candy

I think you’d agree this candy is kind of expensive. No, it’s not from a movie theater snack bar.
No, it doesn’t come with prepaid dental insurance, but you don’t need that because you can’t eat it.
Actually you could eat it but you really shouldn’t, because they are props for TV, movies, and advertizing.

Are they fake?

Carruthers  Wednesday Mar 21 10:11 AM

Fake chews.

DanaC  Wednesday Mar 21 01:25 PM

They look so edible. I want sweets.

The M&Ms and Skittles are real but coated with resin.

Fake Cakes are made of a Styrofoam base and frosted with a rubberized material. The faux beverages are made of a poly resin that sets up to a hard plastic. Artificial cookies, fake donuts, and faux tarts are made of salt dough. All of the fake food sold through Props America is made of non-toxic materials and safe for display use. None of the food display items or fake foods sold on this website are edible.

Heh... I'm pretty sure "salt dough" is Play-Doh.

They're almost the same, but playdough has cream of tartar added to help it to last longer and be re-used. Salt dough is intended as a one-shot deal because you then bake it to create permanent items.

I've also found playdough to be more fragile when baked, not sure why that would be, though -maybe the CoT again? You also make them slightly differently, Playdough is usually heated during the process.
