This is the center detail of a 1755 painting called “Sea Captains Carousing in Surinam”
South America has many psychotropic plants for eating, drinking, snorting and smoking.

Featured prominently were several Rhode Island Captains, two who later became governor of Rhode Island, one became a
US Navy Commander 1775-'78, and one became a Declaration of Independence signer.
They were all friends of the painter John Greenwood who lived in Surinam.
The entire painting measures 37.75 by 75 inches (95.9 cm × 190.5 cm), oil on a bed sheet.

Diaphone Jim Monday Feb 24 12:18 PMLooks like quite a party.
Find a source that allows zooming in for details, humorous and otherwise.
It is on bed "ticking," likely stouter than a sheet.

It's to prove to the other members of the time-travellers' club that he was there, the night of this famous party.
