6/21/2003: Tiny baby survives

Hello Aaliyah Hart. She was born to mom Lorraine three months premature. She was 7 inches long, and fit in the palm of her mother's hand. She weighed 12 ounces and was not expected to live.

Look at your own pinky, and imagine a human hand so small it could wrap around just the last section of it, from the last joint to the tip.

Docs gave her a 10% chance of living. But three weeks later, Aaliyah has beaten the odds and survived, and the birth was announced yesterday. Smallest baby on record in Britain to survive.

Wow.

Having spent 4 and a half months in a neonatal care unit with my own daughter, I've seen more of these tiny babies than a lot of people. Even so, I never knew a baby under 14 ounces. Even my tiny baby was huge compared to this little one...she weighed a whole 30 ounces.

Cute little miracle.

7 inches = 17.78 cm
12 ounces = 340 g

Please, please, please remember to post these things in metric units as well. I'm sure there are lots of people reading The Cellar who cannot relate to Imperial units.

Thanks Bruce, always a handy thing to have.
I have a friend in hospital at the moment, and her babies head is the size of a small apple. The wonders of medical science

No World Record

But close! World record is 11oz baby born in the US. I'd say second place is close enough though.

"Twenty years ago, approximately 20% of babies weighing less than 1,000 grammes (2lb 2oz) at birth survived, compared with 80% today."
