9/15/2003: WTO protest gets ugly

IotD often has interesting protestors but these anti-WTO asshats in Cancun Mexico last week took it to a new level: that's liquid feces they're throwing on riot police. Another South Korean protestor stabbed himself to death on behalf of his fellow small farmers.

SteveDallas  Monday Sep 15 12:40 PM

Man, I've gotta give some props to the photographer for getting that one.

Umm, sorry, I mean, what are they protesting this time?

tokenidiot  Monday Sep 15 12:42 PM

Does it just seem like it, or are protestors getting more retarded?

wolf  Monday Sep 15 12:46 PM

Ten bucks says the asshat with the shitbucket hasn't the vaguest clue what he's "protesting".

So, where are the shots of the Starbucks being destroyed?

(also, I hope the dumbfuck either got himself a major beatdown, or at the very least charges of aggravated assault on a police officer.)

Griff  Monday Sep 15 01:04 PM

Inside the meeting, the main problem was the anti-free trade first world countries continuing to crush third world agriculture.

warch  Monday Sep 15 01:16 PM

I look at these doofus protestors as the religious left's mindless fundamentalists turning off any constructive discussion of trade issues via their stupid rays of destructive shit. When will the clever suicide bombers appear?

Elspode  Monday Sep 15 02:08 PM

Everyone sees different things when they look at a picture. I see the liquid dookie leaving a typical 5 gallon size plastic commodities bucket in a remarkably straight path. Due to a combination of air resistance and anglar momentum deviations, the semi-liquid begins to diverge from a concentrated stream before the effects of gravity have even begun to cause that stream to start arcing downward. All of this indicates that the guy lobbing the shit has done so with substantial force, probably indicating the level of vehemence he felt at the moment of launch.

A lesser amount of force while throwing the goo would have had it dispersing in a wide, sloshing pattern almost as soon as it left the container. This guy was pissed, and he really put his back into the launch.

LUVBUGZ  Monday Sep 15 02:27 PM

If I were one of the cops that got "shit on" I would have snatched that asshole and shoved his face into the pool of crap that would be left on the ground and held it there until he cried "tio". Then gave him a few subtle ass kickings as I escorted him into the paddy wagon:p

e unibus plurum  Monday Sep 15 02:49 PM

are you sure it's shit... could also be a large Starbucks latte.

chrisinhouston  Monday Sep 15 02:57 PM

But remember, those guys who look like Star Wars Storm Troopers are riot police in a third world country. Bet they beat the hell out of the protestors!

Antics like that remind me that they used to do similar things half a millinium ago in England when forces tried to overtake the castle gates, empty the septic system on them. Some things never change.

Jacque Strapp  Monday Sep 15 03:38 PM

I would like to see a photo from 5 seconds later

When all the rest of the riot cops snap their face shields down in unison. It looks as if the one in front got it right in the face, under the visor...

glatt  Monday Sep 15 03:42 PM

Protestors

Looking carefully at the picture, I don't see "protestors" I see one set of arms that probably belongs to a single protestor. The rest of the people in the forground are cops or news photographers. There may be other protestors outside of the frame to the right, but that's an assumtion.

Actually, after further review, I think that's banana Gatorade, and not feces. Maybe it's a fellow cop, throwing the traditional victory Gatorade at the end of the protests.

geneticfreak  Monday Sep 15 04:14 PM

It troubles me when I see people do stupid shit like that and cause the anti side to be seen as a 'bunch of asshat protestors' when there is a valid arguement to their side. One asshole protestor doesn't mean them all, right guys?

Well, unfortunately the anti-WTO protesters have proven themselves right up there with PETA for alienating the people they're trying to win over to their cause. Shame too, because they have some legitimate gripes.

yossarian  Monday Sep 15 07:37 PM

That's right geneticfreak, just because one asshat throws crap doesn't invalidate their arguments. Unfortunately it does cast them all in a bad light.

Liquid feces? I thought only American tourists had a problem with Montezuma's revenge...

They probably were saving it up for a while.

As long as they stand by and tolerate the "asshole in the midst" among them, yeah, it does in my book.

The day the rest of the protestors turn around and start beating the crap outta the guy with the bucket, I'll start listening to their arguments. Until then, they're just one guy with a bucket and a bunch of folks with a guy with a bucket.

I don't know about this case, but other WTO protests were made up of many groups and individuals. I've wondered some times if the violent ones weren't planted to discredit the rest. When a lot of protesters are covering an entire city, you can be sure the media will be where the violent ones are. At least the media where the violent ones are will get on the air.

thecynicproject  Wednesday Sep 17 08:24 PM

if those protesters don't know what they're protesting, then how many of those cops do you think don't know what they're protecting??

ThisOleMiss  Wednesday Sep 17 08:55 PM

Perplexed

OK, this has got me puzzled. Why would anyone collect, gather, buy, or otherwise obtain a bucket of liquid shit? Much less fling the thing. I mean when I clean out the lizard cage and the goat pens we're talking boots and gloves and assorted other gear. That's to gross for words. Hope the flinger had to get a tetnus shot.

Welcome to the Cellar cynic.
At the WTO meetings there are almost as many agendas as there are protesters. The WTO pisses off a lot of people for a lot of reasons.
The cops on the other hand don't have to know anything but their orders and the law. Well, maybe just their orders.
