Tony Shepps Monday Aug 13 11:21 AM8/13: Duck tape prom outfit

Duck(tm) brand duct tape held a competition: fashion your prom gown and tux using only duct tape. Here are the winners.
And you thought it was only good for everything EXCEPT clothing.
By the way, the Duck(tm) website explains that duct tape was originally called duck tape! I assume they wouldn't lie to us; they say duct tape was originally made in WWII. The soldiers called it duck tape because it was waterproof. Then someone had the bright idea to use it to tape ducts.
And to confuse matters further, there is now a better tape for taping ducts. I think it's "aluminized" or something. It's shinier than the old standard grey duct tape.
So to sum up: Duck Tape is the best duct tape, it's okay to call duct tape "duct tape" OR "duck tape", as long as you never use duct tape for taping ducts.

Personally I suspect the 'duck' explanation is spurious marketing etymology. Besides, if it were true, they'd have to worry about losing their trademark.
In any case, ISTR a study about a year ago which showed that duct tape was actually pretty lousy at taping ducts. It's neitther particularly heat-insulating or airtight.
