4/7/2004: Alanis Morissette gets "naked"

This was covered widely elsewhere and for a while I thought about not including it here, but it's just SO IotD. Art and culture and international relations and interesting protest...

Alanis Morissette appeared at the Junos, Canada's music awards show, dressed in a bathrobe and opened it to reveal the above suit. The point: protesting US censorship and the "Janet Jackson episode. She said "We can't show nipples on national TV. I am proud to be able to stand here and do this."

When informed that even in the "true North strong and censor free," she was not permitted to show nipples or pubic hair, Morissette ripped them off the bodysuit, piece by piece.

I think in general she was just trying to have a laugh with it. Still, it would have been a much better protest if she was actually nekkid.

It's kind of sad really.

While I admit that it's pretty stupid (all of the crap over the tit shot), I also think that stunts like Morissette's only show how important the american market is to them.

Is that the goldsuit guy?

Only because you have work to pretend to do at the office, and I'm sitting around the house with a Law & Order rerun as my only alternative entertainment.

I like the symbolism of the act. Even though I'm sure many would have loved to have seen her actually nude on stage, I think she got her point across.

The US has to realize by now that we were the complete laughing stock of the world about that incident. Pepole can act like they don't care...but they do.

It's ironic. Don't you think?

Looks like she cut off her hair. Too bad...Alanis had great hair.

Also, attached is a photo of the front. The announcer tells her that she can't show her nipples and pubic hair, so she rips them right off. :P

Just think-- with one simple piece of tinfoil, the "wardrobe malfunction" would have been perfectly legal. You'd have seen would have been the sunburst (with the center covered), and the perfectly legal flesh around it.

Probably a good thing that DIDN'T happen, though, or the ultraconservatives would be pushing for restricting showing any part of a woman's body.

is it just me, or are those some reall sick looking nipples on alanis?

And you know, you can't do that on televison.
