5/25/2004: Kids in Pipe

Indian street children take up refuge in a giant pipe, trying to escape the heat. The caption tells of the massive heat wave that went through India, but the image says much more.

Hope it wasn't one of these pipes!

Carbonated_Brains  Tuesday May 25 02:09 PM

christ, that pipe is much bigger than my apartment.

That crocodile is much bigger than my dog, but still I wouldn't want to change.

Very sad. This reminds me of my 6th grade Social Studies teacher. She was from India and she when it came down to learn about India's history, she would scoff at the books and say that she didn't need a book to teach us about India's history (she didn't totally mean that..she would reference the books on occasion, but damn if she didn't teach us on her own). She would strongly focus on how horrible the conditions are in parts of the country and how people managed to survive. Made me very appriciative of what I had (and have today).

My brother was one of those kids. (We adopted him when he was seven. He weighed 35 pounds.)

The saddest part? No one in my family has seen him in 7 years. He told us all to get lost and high-tailed it for parts unknown when he turned 18, after his last brush with the law.

But he's got a high-school education, and he's probably still alive at the age of 25. As little consolation as that is, it might still be more than those kids in the pipe ever get.

Actually they look pretty healthy compared to lots of africans,......and no flies.

Those kids are on break from their job at the Verizon call center in the pipe next door, aren't they ...

The one on the right looks like he just finished cramming his mouth with expensive chocolates...oh wait, maybe that's dirt.
