7/24/2004: South Koreans enjoy mud beach

Always good to have IotDs of people in joy. These S. Koreans are participating in the seventh annual Boryeong Mud Festival in Daecheon.

Looks like the mud there is grayish? Googling for the festival finds the following speculations about it: The mud from Boryeong radiates long infrared rays and contains minerals, germanium and bentonite an indispensable cosmetic constituent. Also, cleansing form stimulates blood circulation, slow aging, reduces wrinkles and removes excess oil and dirt from your skin.

REMOVES excess dirt? Anyway, it looks like the festival has become a focus of tourism, as well as promoting the cosmetic qualities of the stuff. One story suggested that the town developed it as an international event by making sure there were lots of photos of foreigners, "English teachers" - which, it would appear, make up a large number of the foreigners there at the moment.

You are bad. It's afternoon now Eastern Time. Hope you're not planning to fly today.

Kitsune Saturday Jul 24 12:35 PM

my sister leaves in 2 weeks for Seoul. she will be teaching there for 1 year. i'll have to let her know she missed the festival.

Why hasn't Lancome, Clinique or even Bath 'n Body Works exploited this essential need ?! Boryeong mud is for EVERYBODY who wants to have that out-of-this-world glow...

The mud is dug up near Boryeong, trucked to the beach area, and dumped at a "Mud Experience Land."

Mud puddle

Reminds me of a raku workshop I went to in a clay mine in Boville Idaho. The land was covered with hills of clay. When it rained one day they became slides and we all looked more or less like the people in the picture.

wolf Saturday Jul 24 11:05 PM

Shame that a country can be so poor it can't afford sand for their beach.

Yes, but can sand do ALL THIS? Where do I sign on as investor? I want to bring the mud of Boryeong to America! Just the thing for all our Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears wanna-be's! The bux will roll in! It's flawless!

irma Sunday Jul 25 11:24 AM

They sure get muddy Then when they get home they need to clean up, some may have a weird bathtub and toilet

jaguar Sunday Jul 25 12:09 PM

That is.....that is so damn stupid words fail me. It has to be fake, the toilet doesn't even have a seat.

xoxoxoBruce Sunday Jul 25 03:01 PM

Well, don't they,....uh,...hover?

jaguar Sunday Jul 25 03:17 PM

Considering the lack of the gap between the two toilets it's either that or risk falling in, particularly if one person got up before the other.

xoxoxoBruce Sunday Jul 25 03:38 PM

I asked Google Images for a "fat oriental" to do a joke about someone wide enough to use that toilet. It gave me this! wtf

wolf Monday Jul 26 02:29 AM

Mebbe that image was posted by a fat oriental?

Cyber Wolf Monday Jul 26 07:45 AM

Maybe that is a fat oriental and the pic is just very nicely Photoshopped.

[conspiracy]You know...what with all the airbrushing and all...[/conspiracy]

Beestie Monday Jul 26 10:40 AM

Or maybe a fat oriental just ate her.

BrianR Monday Jul 26 03:28 PM

Someone else will have to do the inevitable joke here...I refuse on general principles.

mrputter Monday Jul 26 08:17 PM

> the inevitable joke

How many fat orientals does it take to...?

BrianR Tuesday Jul 27 02:58 PM

No, no...the inevitable lesbian joke. Now there, I've gone and done it. Everyone's mind is now firmly in the gutter
