It's not homophobic, it's just misleading. I think the same effect would be had if you were discover the "chick" on the other end of the line was a toothless, saggy-breasted 80-year-old great grandmother.
And in that respect, I don't think his being an ex-marine has anything to do with the situation. Again, it's just misleading, since the assumption when you call a phone-sex line is that you're talking to a bona fide female.
