I'll have to dig for the methods, but they are really tough on foreign govs which don't toe the line.

Yeah, we are really hard on the Dutch!

Reefer Madness

This movie is so hilarious. Watch it stoned.

Been a favorite of mine for years.
It is a study of "the opposite of how people behave on pot".

Shawnee123 08-16-2007 04:41 PM

Absolutely!

Nah, not ten. But I might give you twenty. California is always the trendsetter for the nation, and they're still in the "medicinal only" category (and having lots of struggles with it.)

Shawnee123 08-16-2007 04:51 PM

The trends seem to be towards criminalizing, not de-criminalizing. Soon, they will gun you down for just walking out of a bar, or for lighting up a cigarette in a parking lot.

When was this, Dana?

DanaC 08-16-2007 07:07 PM

Late fifties, early sixties. Britain was just finding its feet again it had taken quite a long time to fully recover.

xoxoxoBruce 08-16-2007 07:26 PM

OK, it wasn't until the Mod/Rocker era.
It was made illegal here in 1937... gave the ex-prohibition feds something to do. Even so, during WW II planting it was encouraged for the war effort. Besides, at that time, only low-lifes like musicians and Negros were abusing it.

DanaC 08-16-2007 07:31 PM

We started regulating it and bringing in the idea of controlled substances much earlier, but we instituted what became known as 'The British System', whereby pharmacists and doctors can prescribe, supply controlled substances to registered addicts.

This was by far the most popular approach in the country, and the medical profession was right behind it. But, international pressure, primarily from the States, but routed through the UN brought an end to the British system in Britain (beginning of the end of the British System was a 1961 UN convention. It continued successfully in a few places (like Holland), but we ended it and suffered an explosion in addiction rates and drug related crime.

I remember watching a programme about the guy who made it his mission to persuade the rest of the world to buy into the anti-drugs agenda. Can't recall the guy's name now. Fascinating character.

xoxoxoBruce 08-16-2007 07:41 PM

If you think of the name later, please post it.

DanaC 08-16-2007 07:43 PM

Will do.
