Run Away!!!!

"I strongly believe that I am an alcoholic and have accepted the need for immediate treatment for alcoholism and other behavioral problems," Foley, a Republican, said in a statement, Roth told the AP.

You guys think this story has strong enough legs to usurp the GOP in November? Has Hastert dug a hole for himself?

I think it's another nail in the coffin. But this fucking vampire has a crowbar. Another nail might not be enough.

Let's see what you support when you vote repubican....

Anybody? Beuhler? Ok, I'll start.

When you vote repubican, you support a party that claims the higher moral ground, claims to be anti-pedophilia, anti-gay (although they phrase spin it to only be "gay marriage"), and pro law-and-order. What they really do is protect one of their own who may have attempted to break the law, is morally inferior, is gay, and is a pedophile.

Next!

Yeah, the constituency of God's Own Party has a problem with selective myopia. Just another page in a long story.

Happy Monkey 10-02-2006 03:34 PM

Apparently they kept it secret for a year because they were afraid of being accused of gay-bashing.

Flint 10-02-2006 03:38 PM

They would have been "accused of gay bashing" because "the original notes had no sexual innuendo" ???

Happy Monkey 10-02-2006 03:54 PM

I didn't say it made any sense.

There's bigger problem with the "explanation", however. The fact that "it was a male-male relationship" is irrelevant. The fact that the kid was sixteen is the issue.

Foley + A Woman = (outside marriage) turns off fundies a little
Foley + A Man = turns off fundies a lot
Foley + A Man Who Works for Foley = inappropriate, ethics issue
Foley + A Woman Who Works for Foley = inappropriate, ethics issue
Foley + A Child = crime. Boy, girl? Irrelevant.

Fair enough. It would be like having dog poo on your shoes if you hadn't done that.

BigV 10-02-2006 05:40 PM

Have any of you read the "transcripts" of the IM/text exchanges between Foley and the kid? I don't usually indulge my purient impulses, but this one got through. It is sickening. The headline on the ABC site warns Reader Discretion Strongly Advised. I agree.

My first reaction to this story on Friday afternoon was to say wait wait wait. Let's just see what happens. Innocent until proven guilty. I still feel that way, but I must say the evidence piling up is very damaging. And disgusting.

It will be interesting to see what effect this will have on the elections. There was no time to pull Foley's name off the ballot, so all votes for him will go to a substitute, Joe Negron.

This means that the people who vote Foley on the ballot are:

Those who know they are electing Negron and approve of him.
Those who know they are electing someone who will replace Foley and prefer any Republican to Democrat Tim Mahoney.
Those who think they are reelecting Foley even knowing what he is accused of and still prefer him to a Democrat.
Those who are completely clueless about the whole affair and/or are just pulling the Republican lever.

Of course having established themselves as the party who wanted to impeach a president over lying over a consensual affair with an adult woman, being accused of covering up the alleged solicitation of minors does bring things into perspective.

Special prosecutor. anyone?

From here
Quote:

Whomever Republicans pick faces an uphill challenge against Democrat Tim Mahoney in a district that was seen as a safe GOP seat until last week.
The new GOP candidate will have only five weeks to finance and run a campaign and, because of a state law that bars removal of the original nominee's name, will have to convince voters that marking their ballots for the tarnished Foley will benefit the Republican replacement.
Republicans are banking on the Republican leanings of a district that voted 54 percent for President Bush in 2004.
Rooney says some friends have told him that running a short campaign under Foley's name is a "suicide mission." But, Rooney says, "I think it's possible. It is a Republican district."
Looking on the bright side, he's a shoe-in for the NAMBLA vote.

Isn't gay pedophelia okay if you're a God-fearing, moral Right-Winger? I mean, its less dirty when they do it, right?

Well, see, anybody who looked back at Foley's actions was supposed to turn into a pillar of salt. So those reporters who broke the story and everyone who read about it or saw it on TV will soon be in a box with a little girl carrying an umbrella on the label. Just you wait - any second, now. In just another moment.:eyebrow:

Happy Monkey 10-02-2006 10:43 PM

Note, just for accuracy, this isn't pedophilia. 16 is post-pubescent.

If the kid was 16, it's actually hebephilia or ephebophilia, and while icky, legal in many jurisdictions. People constantly get that wrong.

I was reading Joe Scarborough's response to all of this and he says this:

Quote:

Regarding political maneuvering, I would suggest that Democrats remember Napoleon’s advice that one should never interfere when your enemy is destroying himself. Dems should keep quiet so not to open themselves up to charges of hypocrisy. After all, their party did little when one of their colleagues had a homosexual affair with a 17 year old intern—engaging in sex with the teen in his Georgetown apartment and then taking him to Portugal to carry on the illicit affair. The disgraced representative remained in Congress for another decade and was never stripped of anything other than his clothes by the teenage boy.
Can anyone fact check this?

From another source:
Quote:

While the Democrats are creating political hay out of the sex scandal involving Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL), the Democrats were not as outraged when a member of their own party had a sexual liaison with a House of Representative's page. In fact, the Democrat involved in a homosexual affair with a page actually accused the House of Representatives of invading his privacy.

in 1983, Massachusetts Democrat Rep. Gerry Studds admitted to having sexual relations with a 17-year-old male page. Studds was not just communicating with the boy, but involved in a sexual affair.

Why do I ever pay attention to politics! Its all kinds of fucked up...I'm holeing myself back up in my room now.

RL: it's just spin. But he's right, the Dems just need to let the Republicans dig themselves a hole.

First, his name is Studds, so what do you expect.
Second, it shows that Democrats are better at picking cooperative underage gay partners, who won't rat them out. Yay Democrats.

I think it's interesting that repubicans won't rat out each other when they are abusing authority or the law, but when it comes to sex....

Actually some of the Republicans were informed that Foley had issues

Quote:

The FBI acknowledged yesterday that it did not begin an investigation in late July after receiving copies of e-mails sent in 2005 by then-Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) to a Louisiana teenager -- messages that troubled the boy's parents.

Key House Republicans learned of the e-mails in 2005 and chose to deal with Foley privately, warning him to cease contact with the 16-year-old former House page. Top aides to Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) did not inform him about the incident, Hastert said yesterday, and he defended their actions in a Capitol Hill news conference.

Now they're turning on each other. It's like watching sharks in a feeding frenzy when there isn't anything but blood in the tank.
