I believe that US Americans...
... need to make sure their daughters go to class.
|
Oh no - Not again?

I saw this coupla days ago. Really, really, really stupid. And paving a new way for blonde jokes. But she looky good, though.

Ah, I dropped the ball.
What do you believe US Americans? |

I'd say something like: They can't find the US on the map simply because they don't care. They don't see the point of learning it. In their lives, they don't need to know, and they have no curiosity about it. |
I know what you mean, Glatt. A question like that on the fly? Saying things like you said, like i might say, is certainly not what they're looking for. It's a strange question, and one hard to find a diplomatic answer for.
I saw a clip of some morning show where they asked her a question, might have been about global warming, where she was prepared with an answer, but I thought it was cool they were helping her out of her embarrassment. She said on the show how hard it was to be on TV after saying something so stupid that became a big news item. So, I give her credit for that. |
It was a bad question, but you could see her coaching coming out. You don't have to know anything but hit a few buzz words and you'll win. I'm just really anti-pageant. I don't see any redeeming values in the things.

if you don't HAVE a map, how can you be expected to read it? And if the South Africans and Iraqis won't help us? what the hell can you do? she's one sharp cookie if you ask me. I mean,....her makeup was perfect! you think that comes easy? |

I was trying to be nice (for once--practicing my diplomacy) so I left this off earlier, but I was thinking: youse guys could surely find something to stick in her mouth so you didn't have to have a conversation with her. |
US Americans...
When you ask for directions with a map, people are willing to help you.
When you ask for directions with a globe....That's a whole 'nother story. (unknown comic) |
I would have been ready for this question; I was asked to write a two page paper for Comparative Non-Western Environments on just this very topic. Reason US Americans can't find US on a map? They don't teach kids geography anymore. How can US American kids possibly know something that isn't spoon fed them?
|
I've actually often considered the reason the average US citizen is behind the rest of the western world in geography, and I actually have a little theory. I think the reason your average westerner is more knowledgeable than we, is from necessity. Many americans have never left their country because they never have to, in fact it's a bit of a hassle.
We can't hop on the chunnel and arrive in a different country, little hop flights from city to city for some euros, these things are foreign to us. Most americans live their whole lives never leaving the country, in fact many don't leave their state. In addition, most western media is modeled after the US's and a great many people world wide speak english, so in the end, we're not forced to confront other societies or know where they're from. Whether good or bad, I think our geographic and cultural isolation has created a situation where one never NEEDS to know where one is on a globe, because just about everyone they meet is from their country or even state. |
