100% Whole Grain VS. 100% Wholewheat

Any difference?

Cloud 10-03-2007 05:38 PM

well, sure. There are more grains than just wheat, you know. Rye, oats, etc.

The BIG difference, and the one you have to watch out for, is bread advertised as "healthy," "wheat," "multi-grain" etc. which is NOT whole grain. You have to check the label. If it just says "wheat flour" or "enriched wheat flour," it's NOT whole wheat.

What about the following:
  • Wonder Whole Grain White
  • Wonder Whole Grain Wheat
  • Wonder Whole Grain Honeywheat
  • Nature's Own Honeywheat
  • Nature's Own ButterBread

I'm technically :p on the South Beach Diet, so I want the nutrition, but good taste is most important to me, and that Earth Grains crap just doesn't do it for me.

Drax, read the ingredients. That's the only way you can be sure.

Anyone have any tips on how to make 100% whole grain bread? I have tried with wheat, but I figure it might be the altitude, as I sit above 6000 feet.

Yes, I know I can do that, but is there any logical reason why I can't ask here?

DanaC 10-03-2007 06:20 PM

Did I say don't ask here? Fuck me, I only offered my tuppen'orth of advice.

My point was this: Nature's Own Honeywheat could mean anything. Those are phrases that marketing people have come up with. If you just go off the marketing then you may be misled (which I believe was much what Cloud was saying). If you look at the ingredients you are seeing the raw materials that have gone into the product, rather than the marketing slant.

What about them? If you are asking whether they are whole grain, the only way to tell is if it says "whole wheat flour" or equivalent.

Because we can't see the label from this far away?

That's the brand name, not a marketing phrase.

I have no idea what vclept is. I do know you were a touchy little cunt and I objected.

A brand name is a marketing phrase. Otherwise they'd just call it BREAD.

sorry, but just what do you think brand names are, hon, if not marketing phrases?

UNBLEACHED ENRICHED WHEAT FLOUR
means it's not whole wheat.

DanaC 10-03-2007 07:39 PM

On a more serious note, I'd be inclined to avoid the 'High fructose corn syrup'. If it's the stuff I'm thinking of it's seriously bad for you.

Cloud 10-03-2007 07:43 PM

although the ingredients list "whole wheat flour," it's far down the ingredient list. For genuine whole wheat bread, it must be the FIRST listed ingredient.

verklempt: all choked up

Actually, I don't either. :p But it was from Mike Myers' "Coffee Talk" on SNL.
