Fractured Tibia & Fibula Due to Erotic Dancing

Every now and again one of our physicians brings important medical journal articles to our attention.

Usually this is related to an interesting clinical case presentation of some psychiatric issue.

Tonight was a little different. I present for your consideration Fractured Tibia & Fibula Due to Erotic Dancing

Yes. That is really what it says.

In brief, there is a popular local dance in Trinidad & Tobago, called 'wining' (described in the article) that has resulted in injury to some people who attempt it.

There are a couple of nasty pre-reduction x-rays of injury, along with a charming picture of a gentleman who is likely one of the article's authors demonstrating the dance (although this would have been much more instructive as video rather than a still image.)

The conclusion reached by the authors appears to be that this is a dance that should not be attempted by fat, drunken tourists.

As if that were not bad enough ... younger males who attempt this dance also face danger ... one far greater than a broken leg.

Quote:

'Wining' in particular has been associated with paraphimosis in young males and is documented as an esoteric cause of paraphimosis.
I had to ask about paraphimosis. Now that I know I'm not brave enough to go look on the net for further information. The doc reports it's an eversion of the foreskin that causes a severe stricture of the ureter, resulting in extreme pain, swelling, and an inability to pee. Standard of care is an emergency circumcision.

Kids, don't try this at home.

Ulp!!!

My natural curiosity got the better of me and I made the inevitable mistake of looking up paraphimosis.

If you wish to do so, I leave the option to you. I'm not posting links to any of the frightening pictures.

Untreated tissue can necrotize.

However, I did find the article referenced in the tib-fib fracture article from above.

Did you see that picture on the couch or whatever?

That was yum!

Fortunately, I'm safe from this dangerous dance for three reasons,

1) I can't dance
2) I'm not obese
3) NOYB

But the phrase "autoamputation of the dorsal penis" is still a nasty one. But it sounds better than "your head pops off", I suppose...

Granted that I haven't done the deep research to fully comprehend this topic, but I'd really like to know this much...what is so damn appealing about this dance that people risk necrotic penises and broken limbs to perform it?

I've seen slam dancing do less damage than what is described here. For my own part, I tend to avoid recreational gyrations which pose any threat to my penis outside of getting it wet.... (sorry, that just sort of typed itself up there unbidden).

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity. Especially when leavened with significant amounts of alcoholic beverage.

Except for my Bar Mitzvah, I have never been so glad to be Jewish as when I read that article.
