War Movies
 

Maybe it's because of the War in Iraq, or maybe it's just a warmup to Memorial Day, but there have been some great war movies on.

Tonight is The Best Years of Our Lives , about three WWII veterans returing home and trying to readjust themselves as civilians.

Harold Russell , plays a character written for him, a double amputee.

Some of the best directors came out of WWII, and they made some of the best "thinking man's" war movies out there.

The Longest Day, Stalag 17, The Big Red One. Actually, Stalag 17 began as a stage play.

And don't forget, Francis the talking mule, joins the army.:)

have you seen 'When trumpets Fade" yeesh... it was HBO (i think) good movie.. no "Hell is for Heros' but damn.

It's not a war movie marathon unless it includes The Great Escape and The Dirty Dozen.

Come to think of it ... I may have to go through the big pile o' movies and put together one of my own, rather than relying on a cable network ... in addition to the two above, I have Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan and Das Boot on DVD.

Don't forget Mel. We were Soldiers, Gallipoli and Braveheart

You can't really leave out the Band of Brothers series if you are willing to consider newer film. They may be popular among those who couldn't even find France on a world map, but Spielberg/Hanks did a good job bringing Ambrose's book to film.

can't forget Patton wolf. And Laurence of Arabia.

This sucks, wife hates old war movies. One of my favs, think it was Jimmy Stewart, playing a reluctant country boy WWII war hero.

Das Boot also.

Midway...loved that.

I forgot to add The Young Lions. Marlon Brando stars as a German officer near the end of the war who begins to realize he's on the wrong side. The scene where he finally sees a concentration camp is memorable.

Kelly's Heroes was interesting.

Steve McQueen just jumped the barbed wire on the History Channel. Too cool.:D

For an anti-war war movie, Johnny Got His Gun is a real gut-wrencher.

For the lighter side of death and destruction, I like Father Goose and Operation Petticoat.

For a truly bizarre WWII experience, Slaughterhouse Five is hard to beat.

on the lighter side, let's not forget Mister Roberts. I still laugh when I see it.

On the darker side, From Here to Eternity, Bridge at Remagen, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.

In high school, my boyfriend and I went and saw that movie the same weekend he happened to get his selective service card in the mail. The combination of events fucked his head up royally for several weeks.
