Wood repair help
Yea.I know, but there's some great woodworkers on here.
My old house has ¼” cabinet grade plywood for paneling. Some has to be removed. Beyond repair. Some can maybe, be repaired. The veneer has turned loose in a few places. I really would like to save what I can. Some of it is black walnut. I’ve looked at glue injectors, and other things. But I seem to get TMI about glues and other things. I think I’ve worked out a do-dad to put pressure on the places that need work. I have no idea what glue to use or how to get it where it needs to be.

well there's carpenters glue. it keeps it's dimensions after drying (doesn't shrink and leave gaps).
i've used Gorilla glue a bit recently. It also seems to keep dimension but surfaces need to be wet to 'activate' it. http://www.gorillaglue.com/home.htm edit: get some kind of syringe to inject it where you need it -- just some disposable ones since it's gonna be a one shot deal anyway using glue! ![]() Last edited by barefoot serpent; 03-10-2006 at 05:45 PM. |

Sorry, I haven't done any veneering, but I'd probably try to figure out that TMI. The glue is important. You also might want to check and see why it's coming loose. If there's any rot or moisture back there, it may not matter what glue you use.

HM. Not to be rude, but we had a small storm here last year. Some is because of water damage, other might be from age. I'm thinking that the old glue is still in and have no way to clean, scrap it out. . Would like to drill a small hole and inject glue. What kind don't know. I gave a shot at google for repair veneer, but got Too Much Information. Thanks

In the old days, hide glue was used for gluing veneer. Sometimes, it can be re-activated by heating it with an iron. Try going up to some of that "beyond repair" plywood and putting an iron on it. Experiment. It can't hurt anything if the plywood is already shot. Your plywood stands a pretty good chance of not having hide glue in it, but you never know. Modern glues shouldn't delaminate with exposure to water, so whatever the glue is, it's not what they use today for plywood.
Like HM, I haven't done any veneer work, but I did work for a guy for a year restoring furniture. When he would let me walk away from the tank of stripper and watch him, I once saw him repair bubbles in veneered furniture. If there was a small bubble he would try the iron first (a special veneer iron.) If that failed, he would try injecting it with a syringe using regular Elmer's wood glue. If he had trouble with that, he would get out a utility knife, and slice the bubble with the grain, and use a piece of paper to work glue under the veneer. A special veneer hammer was used to press down the veneer to make it stick. If the hammer didn't work, he had a small slab of marble he would set on it while it dried. Then he would sand and refinish. Good luck with whatever you end up doing. |

Liquid nails would work but getting in where you need it would be a bitch. This might help.
