Wikileaks, the Arab spring and Occupy Wall Street
A friend linked to this through FB. I think it gets the important parts correct, although I'm not certain it gets the chronology of the pressures on Wikileaks quite right.
The full blog post is here: http://bradhicks.livejournal.com/450964.html But I'll cut and paste the core sections: Quote:

I had to put this here to get under the 10,000 character limit.
The important and interesting points I get from this: 1. Dissatisfaction with the current system is an "Emperor's new clothes" situation. Finally people are realising that there are LOTS of other people, normal people with jobs and homes and stuff, who aren't happy with the way things are being run. 2. What people believe is at least as important as what is actually true. Which is why media is so important, and why media freedom is important. 3. Rebellions succeed or fail depending on whether the army/police/secret police are willing to do mass killings of their own people. Oh, and Merc ... sorry for what this just did to your blood pressure.

That's brilliant. Really brilliant. What a fascinating perspective on recent events.

Despots and teenage girls have a lot in common.

I don't know. I read/scan through this blog and I get the same feeling
as when I see the stuff about "Building 7 was a CIA operation", or whatever. But then, I usually don't catch on when someone is pulling my leg... until someone says "Bill, they're pulling your leg" Now, you take the Koch brothers... that's a whole different story. ![]() . |

Sometimes that stuff is not so far fetched. In overseas military units are small pockets of people who think like UG. Who think military crimes are perfectly acceptable. Who approve of torture. And know that JAG is evil.
Sometimes it does not justify the actions by others that expose that crime. But their actions are secondary. Primary are the actions of those who commit the crime and their peers who are accessories to that crime. All in the name of "I feel it is right; so it must be right". |
