I knew it was hot...

...but not THAT hot. That's right, we just had "the warmest first half of any year since records began in 1895." You can read the whole analysis at this NOAA site:http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2006/s2663.htm

Here in Hotlanta, it's been running about 6 to 8 degrees above normal for the last few weeks, and they say we'll have more of the same. And then there's our famous smog; OK, it's not as famous as LA smog, but were trying really hard:

Why do they say 'warmest' when they mean 'hottest' ?

Because if you average over the whole Earth, it's very nice!

Because they're climatologists, and they want to use the same word when describing winters too. After all, the "warmest February on record" probably doesn't actually qualify as "hot" at all...especially if one is referring to, say, Maine.

On the other hand, you could assume it's a conspiracy to cloak global warming too...you know..."global hotting"?

Thank you for being so weather-wise , MaggieL . Pangloss is therefore not a climatologist , and he does not know what he is on about .

Huh? What kind of construction is that?

Actually, weather and climate are areas of interest for me. In fact, I'm going to experience some adiabatic cooling after work today.

British. "on about" means "talking about".

It's f*cking HOTT here in OHIO (four-five days in the nineties) you can't even go outside. You can't even poke your nose out the door.

I'll take winter any day over this.

British. Figures. Like saying: "Buddug is a wanker for saying I don't know what I'm on about."

The thermostat on the bank across the street is reading 115...to hot to be true even in Kansas? Doubtful, if you add the heat index. I'm glad I have an inside job.

C-mon' down to Central FL (no off-shore breeze here), we'll have a stogie while tending the BBQ out back & talk about heat.

I wasn't trying to debate that we are the hottest here in Kansas...just merely being thankful that I'm inside.
...if you're offering an invitation...
So...exactly how hot is it in Central FL where there is no cool offsetting breeze from the ocean?

Oh toughen up, I mowed the lawn today, it was lovely...
Actually it sucked, but I was preparing myself for tomorrow, when I get to go do a major cleanout at school - with no a/c and no running water. Woohoo...
