Around the World for $0.10 per Pound
Our buddy Kirk pointed to an article about the economics of bottled water, by Ethan Zuckerman.

I read recently, they loose about 10,000 containers a year to the briny deep. Keeping the shipping costs down, means they can't run too tight a ship, I guess. Of course it would be unethical for the insurance companies to pay off those containers and make up the loss by jacking your homeowners and car insurance. ![]() Well now, the water got from Fiji to CA for a dime....but that's not Harvard Yard... Zuckerman is very anti-bottled water as a waste of money and resources. Quote:
I was buying bottled water because my domestic water would eat stainless steel. Then I spent more than some small country's GNP, to fix that and you know what...I still buy it. Convenience...there is no other reason. Sloth, causes a waste of money and petroleum. Take(sucker punch)that, Mother Earth. Take (hands cash) that, Big Oil. Take (first born) that, Middle Eastern Sheik. Oh, like you're not?

Fascinating stuff!!
Regarding the bottled water, someone pointed out that the bottle itself is a petroleum product. I put a Pur filter on the kitchen tap and that pretty much answered that, until Jac pointed out that the Poland Spring sparkling water with lemon is a nice refreshing thing. |

And, on the other side of the "let's make big bucks off of water" coin, there is Dasani, a Coca Cola product, which is made from filtered local water, with just a hint of enormous advertising budget added for extra flavor.

Don't forget scare tactics--I remember a campaign awhile back saying that clear plastic bottles had some chemical in them that could in theory leech into the beverage and cause cancer. But the one thing every scientist knew for sure was that blue bottles were okay in this regard. Very silly stuff.

I heard from my Genetics teacher that Coca-Cola has some derivative of formaldehyde in it that can cause cancer if you drink too much.
And as for the clear plastic bottle cancer thing... I remember hearing that the chemical only was released into the water if you froze or microwaved the bottle.

I think the plastic bottles are only a problem when refilled and used repeatedly. I wish I could remember where i read it, but the basics were;
~Cloudy plastic is safer than clear, but you only find them in gallons for the most part. ~Clear bottles are ok until you start bending them which micro-cracks the smooth surface. UT, yes....Petroleum is major in every step. Pumping the water with electric pumps, operating the bottling plant, plastic bottles, transportation from point to point ending at you're house, and disposing of the trash. So much time and resources for something that's not necessary. He makes the point, if we spent that much money on improving water supply systems, everyone in the World could have safe water. ![]()

Gilmour is a true renaissance man. He's also a pilot. And my own personal hero.

here in the Uk, cocoa-cola withdrew Dansani when it was revealed as ordinary tap-water. The UK populace, already paying high water rates to the privatised water companies, collectively said 'you gotta be kiddin' me'....

was that to me? the tale is true.... dansani as tap-water made the news headlines over here. Or were you bemused by the 'high water rates' thingy?

Oops, should have been more specific. Nope, talking about Dasani. I cannot believe they get away with that over here. Part of why I wish I was European.
