Shaken, not stirred.

Just got back from the pictures, the new Bond movie is excellent! They've rescued the franchise again. I read all the books when I was in my teens and loved them, but by far the best was the first one, Casino Royale. I have never been the biggest fan of the films though, because of the huge portions of cheddar they serve up. The only Bond I really liked was Timothy Dalton, because he was the closest to the character in the books...

Til now. Craig does a fantastic job of the character, the action is gritty and believable, but still with the large scale that we've come to expect from a Bond movie. Unlike many of the other Bond films, in this one he doesn't seem indestructable and that gives him way more edge.

We've jumped back to the start of his character in this film, we see what makes him the Bond of later adventures, and that allows for a few chinks in the armour to show.

Anyone who likes the books, I can heartily recommend seeing this movie.....anybody who likes a cracking adventure with a sense of scale and a dark humour, you should enjoy it too.

As far as liking the books goes ... how does the plot of the new Casino Royale stack up against the original novel?

It's quite close actually. There are a few changes, to bring it up to date, but it retains much the same flavour. I couldn't point out the specific changes, as it's about 15 years since I read it :P But, I think they've got it about right as far as I can recall.

Of course, M is a woman now, not a man, but the relationship between the characters is very much in keeping with the book.

Crikey - you find out the funniest things here. I too am a fan of Dalton-Bond and get very frustrated when people dismiss him.

It does help that my hero of a father liked him for the same reason as Dana and that I was the right age to have a HUGE crush on Timothy Dalton....

I am now part of a worldwide club of 3. I always knew I'd find a peer group eventually.

And after all that, back to the OT. I'm not going to the cinema at the moment so will have to wait for this on DVD. I know it won't be the same, but at least I can enjoy the film in peace.

I always loved Roger Moore, but as SG points out, it might be an age thing. I was in HS when the Moore Bond was out, and I LOVED Octopussy and The Spy Who Loved Me.

NEVER liked Sean Connery.

As for the rest, to be honest, I never watched them.

I totally cannot understand that. He is the one true Bond.

There's much to be said for that.....there was a child sat behind us with his parents who spent the whole film asking them plot questions.....like, (spoiler) whilst Bond is looking upset over the body of a dead woman, the kid asked "is he cross at that lady?" kind of broke the mood.

So this is the first Bond remake. I'm wondering if they'll remake Dr. No, Goldfinger,...?

No, it's not a remake, the original Casino Royale movie wasn't OFFICIAL for some reason or another.

The first Casino Royale was'nt a Brocolli film. ISTR that Fleming sold all the right to his novels, save for Casino Royale, to Brocci's outfit. With the one stipulation..... they could use the characters and the titles, but NOT the plot of the novels.... which is why the films were nowt like the books.

Why Casino Royale (the first Bond novel) was excluded, I don't know.

The only previous productions of Casino Royale as I recall, were an American version with an American Jimmy Bond and a spoof with Peter Sellers. This is the first serious attempt to do Casino Royale as a proper James Bond movie.

The first American version of Casino Royale was a made for TV movie.

One of my coworkers saw it and was telling me about it last night. He had not read the original novel, but I questioned him about some things and it seems they may have used more than just the title for this one.

The rights may not have been his to sell. Authors often unknowingly get screwed when they sign a contract for their first book, because they don't have an agent and don't know what they're signing away.

They kept it quite a lot of the plot. It was probably a decent film....but Bond is quintessentially English(or at the least British) An American Bond, would be like having an English John wayne.
