This is a great idea if they can market it completely. I had read somewhere - a New Yorker article maybe? - that it's possible to manufacture diamonds, it's just not as cost-effective as it is for DeBeers (the diamond monopolists) to mine them and release them at the right rate to the world.

If people find it's a good idea, it may allow the diamond manufacturing industry to figure out more cost-effective ways to make them, and then the price of diamonds will fall like... er... a rock.

While i hate that monopoly in some ways teh manufacture of diamonds does kind of destroy the mystiscm and allure around them, which is kinda sad.

The mysticisim and allure of diamonds is pretty much manufactured be deBeers and pals, the same folks who are manufacturing the scarcity. The only thing that *isn't* manufactured is the diamonds themselves.

This is why I told "the little lady" that she better not plan on having a diamond ring from me. I despise the manner in which these companies obtain the diamonds. I despise how they create the rarity and therefore the price. I despise how they create this false sense that diamonds are something to be cherished forever, thus making the consumer feel that Gammy's diamond will be worth more than your own life if she's dead. Diamonds don't age, so why should it matter that this woman wore a hunk of carbon around her finger for the majority of her life?
How logical is it to have to spend many, many dollars on a chunk of the earth that does nothing but sparkle for your friends eyes? Do blind people give diamond (engagement) rings or jewelry? What does it prove other than you have disposable income? You can even get something just as nice that isn't nearly as expensive. CZ is a fraction of the price, and will fool people just the same. Why should it even matter to someone else the cost of a piece of jewelry? Does it mean that the love is cheapened? Does it mean that the marriage isn't worth as much?

I also told my chica that this is the only rock she'll get from me -

"Will you marry me?"

Yeah, but when she finally gets a rock it will really mean something to her.

When her friend's say, "Oh that's spectacular. Did your husband give you that?"

She'll say, "That is my husband ... and he was spectacular!"

Oh, yea. They can do anything with me they desire once I'm dead. I don't need anything once I'm no longer breathing or beating. I'm talking about before that happens.

Just out of curiosity, Nic, what is/was your profession?

Did you have to do post-graduate work for that?
