Anti-abuse coloring book

From a Newsweek story about efforts by the New York Diocese to educate kids about abuse. I find the cartoon a bit bizzare, and do they really mean to teach kids to never be alone with an adult? Kind of hard to do.

And just what is that kid doing under those blankets?

And by the way, I am not making light of the issue of priest sexual abuse. Not sure I've mentioned this before, but the attorney I work for is a Diocesan attorney. We are heavily involved in several abuse cases (not representing the accused perpetrators; representing the Bishop). I'm very familiar with the current climate of lawsuits and responses by the clergy.

The legal issues are interesting from an objective standpoint, but the personal issues are heartbreaking. I do have to say that many people are jumping on the bandwagon and blaming all of their fucked up lives on relatively minor incidents. But not all.

And I still think the cartoon is creepy! (and duh, a robe. just goes to show I'm not Catholic).

Except that most kids are abused by family members or trusted friends. It's easy to tell kids to be careful of strangers. Not so easy to tell them to suspect their teachers or Uncle Ralph.

So I don't look silly? Far too late for that, I'm afraid.

And I happen to know a priest who looks exactly like the guy in the cartoon. Nice guy!

That's one creepy coloring book. Almost as scary as Family Circle, or Circus, whatever the heck it is, with dead Grandpa hanging around all the time.
