'Nother fark classified coming up
I gave Drew's beer fund $25 for another round of classified ads for the Cellar... this one pointing to the image of the day. So we oughta get some addl traffic for the next seven days.
This is preceding the summer months when activity goes down, so I figured now was as good a time as any to do that. |

Ought to be interesting... have you gotten any hits off the ad-words thing on Google (except for the one thread where it was mentioned)?
I remember the ad that led me to The Cellar (Waffle BBS version)... it stuck out like crazy because it was like a wall of plain text in the middle of a bunch of ads that were nothing but moderately tacky ANSI art. I wonder what the modern equivalent would be..... plain text in a courier font on a grey background (the original default MOSAIC background... IIRC at that point there wasn't even a BGCOLOR modifier)? |

No, yknow, the Google response was kinda poor I think. I don't measure it in clickthroughs, I measure it in a very unscientific feel between hits and new users.
I did have text ads on K5 too... which I think gets a different class of people than fark, but no matter, it takes all kinds in this world. |

Blogger.com Micro Ads
San Francisco-based Pyra Labs was formed in 1999 to build powerful web tools for regular people. Pyra's main product, Blogger, has been widely acknowledged as the leader of the rapidly growing weblog phenomenon, which has transformed how people—from the digerati to high school students—communicate, gather news, and share information. Blogger has organically grown to over 560,000 registered users worldwide.
And they are offering text micro ads on Blogger for as little as $10. Not bad for a large target market of creative types. Last edited by Nic Name; 05-22-2002 at 08:38 PM. |

Great minds -- today I noticed that blogspot will take text ads, and that's way cool. If I can ever get Paypal running, I think that would be a great way to handle donations: they go right to text ads.

UT, did you put some more ads up? The numbers seem to be spiking again.

Actually I pointed to the IotD; there's a Fark story about today's nude Peta protest but the poor Farkers only got a tiny image from Yahoo, so I let them at the nice big shot that Tove found.
I do have a Fark classified running for the blog version right now. I wanted to kick it off quickly. That has kept the Cellar numbers up. It looks like about a third of the people who go to IotD also hit the Cellar link there. At this point the regular summer slowdown should be affecting us, but the ads have kept things going. There's always a summer slowdown, not just here but all over the net. When I was adminning an ISP we saw it: a drop-off of at least a third once the summer started. |

Ads that link to IotD blogview do a better job of driving permanent traffic to the Cellar, because the reader sees IotD but hits the Visit the Cellar link at the top of IotD blogview and is taken to the main page of the Cellar. From this perspective users get a better overview of all the Cellar has to offer. Good move.

Google found the blog view version yesterday. I didn't tell them to spider it - they just did.
I imagine Google got there from Fark as well - from Google trying to do what it can to make its search timely. I think they're spidering often-changed sites like Fark more often. |
