If you've never seen old-growth redwoods then Muir Woods is just up the road from SF.

If you're flying to SF, how are you planning to get around on the coast?

It makes a big difference whether you're planning on using a car, as opposed to public transportation, or nagging friends for a lift, to figure out what you can go see.

OK, a car. Now how much time, and how far are you willing to stray from SF? Up to Oregon? Washington? Over to Vegas? Down to LA?

If you are a history buff, you can drive two hours east of Napa to see the Sutter's Mill site. (Sparked the '49 gold rush) Ghost town there. There's an old gold mine near there too that you can tour.

I think Napa valley itself just has wineries and hot air ballooning.

Potential issues with the weather in Nov. May postpone till Spring '09.
