Bali Bombers Executed
Amrosi (the smiling assassin) and co were shot last night. Mixed emotions from Australians and other countries who lost their citizens on the night they blew up the Sari Club and Paddy's Bar.
Personally I'm against the death penalty, but in Inonesia, their home country, that was their punishment. It's been a long time coming and now hopefully some families will now be able to rest a little easier. The families of the bombers are claiming martyrdom for them and that they're on their way to heaven. I guess it depends who's God really resides in heaven.

Well, bullets are just really fast, small stones, kinda.
I am not too concerned about their executions but I do think they should have not had access to the media.

I'm personally very happy to accommodate any murdering religious fanatic who wants to meet his or her god (small g).
I believe that G-d appears to many people in many forms, and that most or all of them are valid. The thing that makes people want to kill and revel in the killing of innocent civilians, are not an aspect of the true G-d, in any of G-d's many names.

They should have cut their heads off and buried them in a seprate location and then not buried their bodies for a few weeks. That would remove chances of them meeting their 100 virgin boys in heaven.

A lot of people are concerned about reprisal attacks, particularly as one of the bombers encouraged his followers to continue to kill infidels and fight US power.
Muslim clerics have condemned those words and asked for peace and calm during this difficult time.

Those who visit death upon the innocent deserve nothing less as their punishment. No, I am *not* a far left tree hugger. I'm a rather conservative tree hugger, actually.

I still submit the ultimate punishment would be to ignore the Muslim burial practices.

I am not in favour of the death penalty. I do believe their crime warranted the most severe penalty allowed under their legal system, which in this case meant death.
Interestingly, many of the victims' families have said they would rather they hadn't been given the death penalty and thereby been refused the martyrdom they so obviously craved. Given how little fear these men had of death, given indeed their active desire to die a martyr's death and their own ability to convince themselves that an execution counts perfectly nicely as martyrdom, a much fiercer punishment would have been life imprisonment. |

I think another part of the objection to the death penalty is also that the majority of the victims were Australian, and we of course do not have the death penalty here in any case. I think many many Australians are morally opposed to it.
The problem is, these men were linked to a later bombing in Bali at Kuta, so they were obviously dangerous either way if in fact that was the case. I don't think they're martyrs though in any case. The people who were killed were innocent in my eyes. I was in Bali a couple of years after the bombing, and the general public there seemed to be very much against Amrosi and co. They hated what they did to their country's reputation as a safe and relaxing tourist destination. I don't think there's that many Balinese people who see them as martyrs either. Perhaps more people in greater Indonesia do, but even Amrosi's family said that what they did was wrong...so I'm not so sure about the whole martyr thing to be honest. I think there's a greater percentage who just think they got what they had coming to them.

I think it's more that the men who were executed went to their deaths firmly believing that they are martyrs.

Well, it doesn't matter too much what they believed now. They're dead. It only matters what others think...unless you believe they'll rise from the dead and create more havoc. lol

Yeah, but wait until they get to Heaven and find out that it really *was* 72 Virginians.
