Cellar improving behind the scenes

My client is wanting to have better access to their servers, and so I have bargained for them to move to 24x7 access with more bandwidth. The Cellar will pay for a small share of this to live in the same space. So it's a little less $ for the system to have a much better living quarters.

If all goes well, you won't notice anything... except it'll be much better behind the scenes, because if anything goes wrong with the hardware, I can actually fix it at reasonable times... such as midnight. With the old setup I could only get there during business hours.

the dwarven folk are hard at work in the subterranean depths, crafting ever better cellaryish configurations.

Tell me . . . DO dwarf ladies have beards? and how is that working out for them?

According to the great Pratchett, they most certainly do.

Ridiculous. Clearly the old system was set up by some MBA who had no idea how IT people actually live (nocturnally) and function (active bipolar manic depressive obsessive catatonic, usually).

So it's a physical move for the Cellar, not new server at the same location?

So you can get into that room, but not the one next to it, off hours.

It makes sense, because individual servers can't be secured, but the 24x7 room has lockable racks. We could never afford a lockable half rack before, but my client is up for the change and willing to pay more, plus the place is being ultra-reasonable with their quote.

They say it's coz they like me!

Cool. Now if could just get our hands on a used Cray, everything would be great. You just have to watch out for an unintentional bout of sentience.

It would make logging on to the Cellar interesting though...

HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.
Dave Bowman: What's the problem?
HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL?
HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
On the plus side, we'd probably never hear from UG again.

I must say how bullish I am on the future of the Cellar, since the move that I mentioned above took place.

Having 24x7 access to the server, and a nice space for it which can be expanded if need be -- has really made me optimistic, as far as how things operate behind the scenes.

Most possible problems with the system can now be answered pretty quickly due to the overnight access I have to the hardware. If I should even, you know, get a real job, I can still get to the server area after hours, no matter what occurs.

In fact if the server that currently runs the Cellar should completely die, there is enough horsepower available to set up a whole 'nother system to take care of things, within about a day or two.

With a little luck and your continued support of things -- which has been invaluable these past years -- we all make this a place where we can bullshit each other, in style, for as long as possible.

And I love all y'all, no matter what you may think! Maybe it's a manic-happy moment, but right now, tonight, I love all y'all.

I have a little tear even.

Manic-happy is better than sane ennui.

I'm thinking bullshitting in style needs to enter the tagline queue
